LaMarcus on Dame

We should really only have a handful of names hanging.

Walton
Lucas
Drexler
Dame (when he retires)

I think we need a ring of honor for Porter, Kersey, Duck, Roy, etc.

Horrible idea. There's only one guy from the last 25 years who should be retired and that's Rasheed Wallace. No one else. He's the only two way player we've had who could get us to two WCFs including a Game 7. Aldridge was here forever and won one playoff series. Roy never won a playoff series. Dame's number will obviously be retired.
Blech. No thanks. He can go in the ring...

Retiring a number is reserved for someone who did something special for a franchise. LMA was just a really good player for a longer than average time with us. Thats it, no title, no MVPs, no scoring titles or other major accomplishment were made by him. His best chance was to go for the life time achievement award with our franchise, he was on track to be the best blazer ever, but he gave that up. Its a joke that the blazers history is so barren that a player with LMAs history is even considered to be retired by us.

Bonzi Wells, years after the fact, regretted he misbehaved his way out of Portland. Greg Oden regretted not having been more dedicated to staying in shape. Aldridge regrets not getting along with Dame. Oi vey, what is it with ex Blazers?

They are early 20s years old kids. That’s usually when people make their mistakes. Just cause they are tall doesn’t change that.

Seriously. We went a little retirement happy from the 77 squad and it's a little embarrassing to be honest. Plus we are going to be running out of good numbers soon.

We should consider un-retiring some numbers.

Yeah, I don't hold it against them personally. But I'd prefer to reward the exceptional players who are loyal/committed enough not to have those problems.

Meh. I think it's fine. The championship team guys should all stay retired. In fact, the guys who have been retired are fine.

But in the future it should be reserved for only the most popular and successful players. Like Dame.

I hear you. It just seems to be forgotten how YOUNG and ill prepared these kids are. Been put on a pedestal for years BEFORE they come into the league and are handed millions.
Trust me, they are mostly just naive kids seeing the world for the first time.
You take a batch of society at that age, and you would see the same thing.......they’d would just be wearing Levi’s and driving Hondas instead of Gucci and Bentleys.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. That's why I think players should be forced to stay in college 3 or even 4 years. The NBA should insist on college courses to teach these players some of these things, and pay for insurance policies and a stipend for "1st round possible" players.

Not only would the education be better for the players long term, maturing more before being given millions would make those players better ambassadors for the NBA.

LMA was a Robin who thought he was a Batman. His relationship with Lillard was made bad by him, not Lillard. LMA was aloof and distant from Lillard because Lillard became the leader of the team.

But this is 100% false. Aldridge gave them years to trade him. He told them point blank he wanted to play in Texas. They thought they could change his mind. They didnt. He made comments publicly about being here, but to the team he was crystal clear.
I heard the same thing. And that's why his number should NEVER be retired, nor should he be honored by this franchise in any way, shape, or form.

LMA was the semi attractive dude at the small town high school who thought he was going to be the king his senior year because the better looking guy graduated..... but then a much better looking and well-liked guy moved into town and stole all his thunder.

I just think it sets a really bad precedent to retire the number of a guy who lied and bailed on the team in his prime.

At least Clyde gave us an opportunity to trade him.

And left when he was falling off

Exactly! Dame always showed him a lot of love!

I agree it cheapens retiring numbers when every good player is retired. The A's have been in Oakland only a few years longer than Blazers in Portland. Best of my memory they retired Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers, Rickey Henderson and Dennis Eckersley, all hall of famers and all won World Series. Plus every team retired Jackie Robinson's number
