...actually, I think you're abusing my words...he IS a front end starter...and so is Shields.

...messiah, like you, I am assuming that Nova has finally figured things out...he's looked pretty damned good recently.

It would certainly make you forget about Phil Hughes if that's the case.

...I'm still trying to understand the reasoning behind the people who for some reason, think that someone is going to give Hughes a BIG contract next year...even if he goes to an NL team he will still be in need of at least one more pitch. I just don't understand why the people who, on one hand, point out how bad Hughes has been...but on the other hand, think he'll garner a big pay day.

Hughes has pitched his way to a modest one year deal in my opinion. Any GM would have to be nuts to offer him anything more than that.

...that's pretty much the way I see it...and if he is willing to give the Yanx a discount and/or be willing to be a mop up guy or long relief guy, fine.

...seems like Hughes can't get people out once he gets 2 strikes on them and you can just watch him implode as his body language changes whenever things don't go his way. But if they can somehow get him on the cheap, why not?

It looks like he's arbitration eligible so the Yankees can make him a one year qualifying offer. Somebody would have to come along with a better deal and be willing to lose the draft pick.

...any idea what that Q-offer would be?...I'm too lazy to look it up.

...and you're right, no team is going to give him a big pay day AND give up a draft pick. And no one, least of all, Hughes, can say he didn't screw up a great opportunity this year to set himself up for a "life changing" contract.

I wholeheartedly disagree that Garza is a front end starter...

he is probably having his best year this year... and that is so far a 3.23 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Pretty good numbers, in 2012 he had a WHIP of 1.18 and ERA of 3.91 in the NL and in 2011 he had a WHIP of 1.26 and an ERA of 3.32 also in the NL... those were his best years prior to a contract year... Is he the best out there? probably...

Compare him to a legitimate front end starter... Kuroda for example... this year he has a WHIP of 1.02 and an ERA of 2.33... Last year, his first year in the AL, he had a WHIP of 1.17 and an ERA of 3.32... his last year in LA (2011) he had a WHIP of 1.21 and an ERA of 3.07. ok, lets look at Shields... in 2011, he had a WHIP of 1.04 and an ERA of 2.82... Last year (an off year in some senses) he had a WHIP of 1.17 and an ERA of 3.52... This year he has a WHIP of 1.28 and an ERA of 3.33... Now just for the hell of it, a true bonafide ace in Verlander... in 2011 he had a WHIP of 0.92 and an ERA of 2.40... in 2012 he had a WHIP of 1.06 and an ERA of 2.64... he isn't a bad option to have on the team, but I wouldn't call him a front end starter... that is all I'm saying

...why are you using 2011 numbers to compare today's pitchers?

...and IMO, a pitcher does not have to be an ace to be a front end starter...you don't consider a #2 as a front end starter?...I consider a #4 or #5 as a back end starter, don't you?...I didn't say or intend to imply that Garza is an ace....but fwiw, Garza's ERA this year is better that both Shields and Verlander.

...but if it will help things, I'll retract my statement....I even went back and edited my original statement.
