When I was on Bones, if we ever had to stay at a hotel, there would be a security guard on our floor. They must do that for NBA players too.
Wow, I wonder if they do. Anybody have an answer for this guy?

I think Ja will be back next week. How can they prove he packed the gun? Couple a games and all is forgotten.

Exactly. There’s no way they could prove the gun came on the plane. All Ja has to say is my friend gave it to me while in Colorado. He’ll get fined and couple game suspension. Nobody will remember after that

So "Fall Guy"? Pretty tough to do if that was the same gun he flashed the kid as well? Then he released a statement "Taking Full Responsibility".
He pretty much already implicated himself.

Those two have absolutely nothing I want. christ...

I love watching Ja! He’s only 23, I was a knucklehead at 23 but nowhere near as skilled, rich or hard working. Hope Ja figures is out cause he is so dynamic. But so was Kemp.

Colorado isn't charging him for waving the gun at the club. Having a gun illegally on a plane is probably a federal crime though? Doesn't matter, he'll be back before the playoffs.

So he’s above the law?

It wouldn’t be that hard to prove it’s his gun, I would assume, since one would assume it’s registered?

Do you see a serial number on it in the video or something? It would take a lot to prove that the gun was transported on the plane. I sincerely doubt that the government has the proof to pull off an indictment, let alone a conviction.

"We have to stop putting ourselves in positions to where they can take away what we've worked so hard to get."

I know this is only a 3 minute clip, so it's a bit hard to determine context, but who is the "We" and the "They" that Shaq is referring to in this quote?

I’m assuming the “they” is the league/owners. Given that the money from fines goes to charity, I’m not sure Shaq’s comment makes a lot of sense.

We = african americans
They = racists, basically
At least that is what I thought he meant.

I think people are overthinking this. Is that too an overthink? Lol

anyhow. I think he means “we” is his era of basketball that turned the nba around and “they” are the young spoiled youth of todays nba.

Interesting. I haven’t been following the story too closely. Is there any racial overtones involved? Or was this just a stupid move by an NBA player? Would Shaq have responded/commented the same if Morant was white?

Honestly, I think @Cugel is pretty much on the money here. I admit I may be giving Shaq too much credit, but I think he's talking about the broader societal context, independent of NBA players.

Definitely feels to me like the "we" is the black community as a whole, and the "they" is anyone who has historically referred to young black men as "thugs", anyone who has denigrated hip-hop culture, anyone who has perpetuated the "blacks are violent" stereotype. What has his community worked so hard to get? Respect, legitimacy, equality, acceptance in the (white) mainstream. Incidents like these that feed into the unfortunate stereotypes give ammunition to those who seek to demean and delegitimize the black community.
