About

The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf is a golf tournament on the Champions Tour. It is played annually in April currently in Savannah, Georgia at The Westin Savannah Harbor Resort. Liberty Mutual is the main sponsor of the tournament. It is often called "The tournament that launched the Champions Tour".

It currently consists of three separate events: the Legends Division is a 54-hole two-man team better-ball event for men over 50, the Raphael Division is a 36-hole two-man team better-ball event for men age 50-69, and the Demaret Division is a 36-hole two-man team better-ball event for men over 70. Only the Legends Division event is an official money/official victory event.

The tournament was founded in 1978 and consisted of a 54-hole two-man team better-ball event for men over 50. Its success provided impetus for the formation of the Senior PGA Tour in 1980. In 1987, a Legendary Division was added. This consisted of a 36-hole two-man team better-ball event for men over 60. These teams also competed in the Legends Division - Charles Coody & Dale Douglass won both divisions in 1998. In 1993, the 36-hole Demaret Division (named after tournament co-founder Jimmy Demaret) was added for men over 70. For this year alone, all three divisions were competed at individual stroke play. In 2002, the Legends Division became an individual stroke play event and became an official money event on the Champions Tour. This format remained through 2007. The Legendary Division was renamed the Raphael Division (after tournament co-founder Fred Raphael who had died in 2001) and became the 36-hole two-man team better-ball event for men over 60.

The purse for the 2009 tournament Legends Division was US$2,600,000, with $225,000 going to each of the winning team.

Collectively, the 63 teams across three divisions own 880 PGA TOUR titles including 82 major championships. The field features 16 current members of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Ten of those players will compete in the Legends Division (Bernhard Langer, Ben Crenshaw, Hubert Green, Tom Watson, Nick Price, Tom Kite, Hale Irwin, Larry Nelson, Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins), while Tony Jacklin will be playing in the Raphael Division. Five others will be competing in the Demaret Division (Lee Trevino, Gene Littler, Billy Casper, Bob Charles and Gary Player).

Several new faces are scheduled to make their first appearance in Savannah, including a number of long-time PGA TOUR performers. Among the players competing for the first time are 2009 & 2011 U.S. Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples, 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger, 2009 Senior PGA Championship winner Michael Allen, 2010 United States Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, two-time THE PLAYERS Championship winner Hal Sutton, 1986 PGA Championship winner Bob Tway, and 10-time PGA TOUR winner David Frost. Couples will team with 2007 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf champion Jay Haas. Allen will team up with Pavin, while Sutton is slated to compete with Larry Mize. Tway will partner with Blaine McCallister and Frost will compete with Dan Forsman. Azinger will partner with Phil Blackmar.

Two teams share lead at Legends

John Cook and Joey Sindelar shot a better-ball 10-under 62 Friday to share the first-round lead with Mark O'Meara and Nick Price in the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf at Savannah, Ga.

Bean and Lu take lead 1-stroke at Legends

When regular partner Jerry Pate was unable to play, Andy Bean turned to Lu Chien-soon. Turned out to be a good move.

Bean and Lu teamed to shoot a better-ball 12-under 60 in a steady, light rain Saturday for a 125 total and a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

"We have one more round to play, but I'm sure I'll be getting a phone call from Jerry," Bean said with a laugh.

Is it possible Pate will have to find a new partner next year?

"I think I got a pretty good one right now," Bean said. "Yes."

O'Meara/Price prevail at Legends of Golf

The tournament wasn't supposed to end this way.

Not after the fun-loving, birdie-happy team format the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf returned to two years ago. The Champions Tour's best players picked a partner and attacked the golf course for three days. Birdies were the game, and they came in waves through the end of regular play Sunday at The Club at Savannah Harbor.

But the tide receded on No. 18, site of the sudden-death playoff between the teams of John Cook/Joey Sindelar and Mark O'Meara/Nick Price, who had played in the same group the final round. The first time the two teams played the hole to decide a winner in sudden death, none of the four players could do better than bogey after Cook's four-footer to win slid left.
