The fact that it still is as prevalent as it is reflects badly on the league. They have folks watching every single game from the Replay Center in Secaucus. They should flag suspicious plays where flopping appears to be going on, review them after the game and impose the penalties more aggressively. IMO, every single game has several flops right now. Get aggressive about penalties and it would quickly go away.
 
If they start calling them blocking fouls or technical fouls then flopping will stop. Fining players only creates a revenue stream for the NBA. It does not solve the problem. The NBA doesn't seem to want to hold his referees accountable. Every single flop is the referees fault plain and simple.​

As long as the penalties are for the players alone, flopping will still be prevalent. Referees need to be held accountable. Empower the referee to call a tech and the flops will quickly go away.

I like the idea of the refs having the ability to call a tech if they spot a flop, I'd even think it would be good for them to take a look at video if necessary. That said, they're still going to miss a bunch of them just because the game is so fast and there are so many other things that they're watching for. Each game should be reviewed afterwards and penalties enforced for flops that weren't seen during the game. I'd like the penalties made more stiff, with suspensions kicking in after the third offense. The league has the tools to put an end to flopping and there's no reason for this to be going on.
 
The penalties for flopping should be 'in-game'. Those puny little fines afer the fact (and almost never imposed) are a joke, when more money is on the line from cheating. If they are going to levy after-game penalties, they should penalize the refs, as I believe dviss argues.

Yes. If they don't want to hold up play for it, they could flag the flops, review them during time outs (as they do with threes), and levy the technical after the fact.
 
Currently players are ejected after two technicals. Three flops in a game could likewise be an automatic ejection.
 
Maybe the NBA needs to expand the amount of refs on court. More eyes means better angles and better calls.

Also, idc if it slows the game down the refs need to converse more on bad calls. How many times does a ref call a foul who wasn't near the ball and didn't have a good vantage point?

No--they just need to bring dviss in to train all the refs on how to prevent being fooled into calling fouls on flops.

When I played in high school and college, the term flopping hadn't been coined, but it was most definitely a technical foul to fake taking a charging foul on an opponent and I saw it called more than once. We had a guy on our team attempt it once and he got hit with a technical. Our coach was so pissed at him, we spent half of next practice working on moving our feet to be in the proper position to actually take a charge. I still remember our coach yelling at us to move our damn feet and beat our opponent to the spot on the floor.

Yeah, start calling in game technicals, and even make it a reviewable call at first if need be, and watch the flopping go away.

Give each coach 2 flop challenges per game, if their challenge is successful they get 5 free throws. If their first challenge is unsuccessful they lose their other challenge. If they are playing the rockets, they should just get 20 random free throws added to the game.
 
No coach challenges - It would already slow down a whistle fest already.

Enforce the fines, make them substantial as a deterrent, and make an official NBA announcement of the offenders each week.
Publicly shame players that choose to undermine the game.

Fining a multi-millionaire five grand is like fining me 35 cents. Not much of a deterrent.
 
Substantial - like 5-15 grand, first time and 25-50 k for multiple offenders.
If they choose to flop - then they will play a few games for free.

Multiple offenders eventually should receive suspensions.

50 k first, 100k second, suspension of 3-6 games 3rd.
 
These big fines just ain't gonna happen. I'd be satisfied with a tech free throw, like for an illegal defense penalty.

That could work. As long as it counts as a technical foul against the offending player - so that if they try to fool the refs twice in one game they get ejected from the game.
 
Forget the fines, they are useless. Most of the worst offenders make >$10 million per year. $50K fines (what's the most allowed under the CBA?) aren't going to phase these guys enough to get them to modify a behavoir that benefits their stats and the outcome of their games.

The money won't work, gotta hurt the team as a whole somehow. I was kidding about the challenges anyway, but you could have a real time flop tracker that informs the refs of flops and adds a free throw as a tech the next time a team is shooting.

I hate hate hate floppers. If my team does it I still don't like it.
