Remember, basic math

If the number is big, it takes much more volume to increase the total percentage. There is no "slight increase" when raising a larger percentage.

The league average in that 17-18 season was 29 3PA per game, at 36.2%. It's currently at 34 3PAs, at 36.1%. The pace of the game has increased slightly.
Teams shot 36% against us then, 38% this past year from 3. Teams shot 40% on corner 3s against us then, 39% this year.
One big difference, that year we had a 79% DRB percentage. This past year, 75. We were better at limiting FTAs that season. Doesn't seem to simply be teams bombing from 3.
I found it! It took a few minutes. I was misremembering the stats.

Which makes it all the more sad that he was so horrible at defending it....... but lol at him being the architect of the three. Come on dude.

Check out the stats year by year. When Stotts first took over, the league average for 3s attempted per game was 20. There was only 12 teams attempting 20 or more 3s per game. We were the 3rd best team at defending the three at the time.

By the time Stotts left in 2020-2021, the league average for attempts per game was 34.6. In a span of 10 years, the league was attempting almost 15 more threes per game. All 32 teams were averaging over 20 threes per game. In Stotts final three years as coach, we were the 20th, 29th, and 20th best at defending the three. In his final year, teams were hitting 37% of their threes against us.

I agree Dame is a defensive liability. He's the best player the face of the franchise. As he leads others will follow. Not to say his teammates will dog it on D just because Dame isn't good, but the leader sets the tone and Dame isn't going to inspire lock down D around him.

The question is can the team surround Dame with awesome defense (while landing a star player) in one offseason to warrant trading their high pick. I say no, but I'm not a GM. Maybe Cronin stumbles on something miraculous. Possibly a second and third move to transform the team. Doubtful. I say keep the pick and hold off on trading Dame until we get the right offer.

Steph Curry disagrees.

Tomorrows thread will be,

Has Dames GM manipulation been his own Achilles heel?

Here you go man. Here's what Chat GPT has to say.

"As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, Damian Lillard, the NBA player, has not been involved in any significant instances of GM manipulation. However, it's worth noting that situations and events may have occurred after my knowledge cutoff.

Damian Lillard has been a highly respected and influential player for the Portland Trail Blazers, and he has been vocal about his desire to compete for championships. He has publicly expressed his frustrations with the team's performance and the need for improvements to the roster. Lillard's comments have sparked discussions about his future with the franchise and potential moves by the Blazers' front office.

While Lillard's desire to see changes and improvements in the team's roster may have strained his relationship with the front office or led to speculation about his future, it wouldn't necessarily be accurate to label it as "GM manipulation" or consider it his own Achilles heel. Many star players express their opinions and concerns about their team's direction, and it is not uncommon for organizations to take those comments into consideration when making decisions.

It's important to recognize that the NBA is a complex environment with various factors influencing team performance and player decisions. The success or failure of a team cannot be solely attributed to one player's comments or actions."

im not up on this AI. It scares me. Like, big picture concerns and depresses me, so i dont really read up on it or use some of the things that are out now.
Besides. Robots dont have biases based on inside knowledge that inevitably goes around in small circles.
Dont support the future machine world.

If Lillard is old then LBJ must be elderly

LeBron James is a freak of nature, unlike anything we have ever seen in the NBA before and will likely ever see again. You cannot compare anyone to LeBron.

Here is what our AI overlords think about Dame's tough contested shots.

"Damian Lillard is known for his ability to make difficult, contested shots and his offensive prowess is a significant asset to the Portland Trail Blazers. While Lillard's shot-making ability can be impressive and can carry the team at times, it also puts a lot of pressure on him as an individual scorer.

For the Portland Trail Blazers to realistically contend, they need to strike a balance between Lillard's scoring and involving the rest of the team effectively. It's crucial for the team to develop a well-rounded offense that incorporates ball movement, player movement, and involves other talented players on the roster. By doing so, they can create open looks for teammates and reduce the dependency on Lillard's tough, contested shots.

Additionally, the team's defense also plays a vital role in their chances of contending. Strong defensive performances and a collective effort on that end of the court can compensate for any offensive challenges and improve the team's overall chances of success.

Ultimately, basketball is a team sport, and while Lillard's individual brilliance is undoubtedly valuable, the Portland Trail Blazers' success will depend on their ability to build a cohesive team and maximize the contributions of all their players."

Dude was the number three scorer in the league and had the same TS% as Embiid 64.5% and 3.5% better than Doncic. Better than Giannis or Shai. So I don't think Dame's scoring efficiency is any kind of problem (not to mention that besides Luka he creates a lot more points for others than anyone else on this list). Dame's shot selection and his overall offense is pretty much unquestionably great. Dude had the most efficient 70 point game in league history last season. Give me a fucking break.
