Japanese company. They sponsor a Japanese baseball team (Rakuten Golden Eagles)

Said it before and I'll say it again. A local/NW only company isnt going to buy the jersey logo. It doesnt make sense for them to spend millions per year on a jersey logo that targets sports fan across the globe when they only sell their products/services in the NW. That'd be like your local neighborhood pizza joint buying commercials that are on TV in Philadelphia, waste of money.

True. But the arena name is more of a local branding opportunity than the jersey logo is in my opinion. I think I mentioned it in a previous post, but there are several examples of other local companies sponsoring arenas and stadiums. Moda was also a unique situation. They had to make a bold move to get their name some awareness quickly after changing the name from ODS Health. It worked.

...not just logos, Nike is now adding a "jock tag" to souvenir jerseys that you can scan with your smartphone to watch recent highlights of that player and other offers! Sounds like NikeConnect is going to be quite the gimmick, but will it actually work? And gain popularity? :dunno:

Nike NBA smart jerseys to allow fans to connect to highlights, unlock exclusive offers

A jersey isn't just a jersey anymore.

In taking over the NBA apparel deal, Nike announced on Friday that scanning the jersey's "jock tag" with a phone will offer the most recent highlights of that specific player and his team. Doing it on game day will unlock offers specific to that player or team, including limited shoe releases.

"We know what we can do -- make amazing gear," said Stefan Olander, Nike's vice president of digital innovation. "But we wanted to do something more and we know the passion that consumers have for these players and their teams."

The new system, called NikeConnect, is part of both the Swingman jersey and the authentic jerseys that will be available for fans to purchase for $110 and $200, respectively, on Sept. 29.

In order to connect, fans with an iPhone 7 and Android device with NFC capability have to download the app and connect it to a NikePlus account, which identifies who they are. Fans can then scan in at any time. The app counts down until the team's next tipoff, updates that specific player's stats within a game if it's in progress and refreshes new highlights 30 minutes after a game's end.

Fans who bought a specific player's jersey will also find that when they scan in, they have a "boost" code that makes that player better when they play the NBA2K18 video game.

How much does Moda pay per year for making rights, $5M? I feel like a 5% tax on each ticket would make up for that.

Would y'all pay that to get the name changed back?

I dont get ads. When i feel something is over advertised i refuse to buy it out of principal.

If we get Carmelo, that should help get us a jersey logo sponsor because we'd get more national/global media coverage.
