Losing weight

This just isn't true. Sorry.

What workouts are you talking about?

It is true. I've done many crossfit workouts. Many of them are much shorter than 20 minutes. It is a good way to pack a good amount of intensity into a short workout. But, IMO, that isn't "in shape".

I'm talking about 60 mile bike races with 6000ft of climbing. Good luck with crossfit being your training.

Typical.

Once you fail to support your opinions that lack up-to-date nutrition science backing, after you fail to open your mind to other possiblities so you can maintain confience in your hardened postion, start making ad hominen attacks.

I could be 500lbs with an inability to walk 10 feet.

It wouldn't change the facts.

It wouldn't change the science.

And these "facts" and "sciences" are supported to heavily by professional athletes. That is why you see so many of them.

And don't start with the "there are less vegans to begin with" line. If the "science" and "facts" backed up your opinion, professional athletes would be doing it, whether they liked it or not. It would be their job.

There are plenty of crossfit workouts that go over 20 minutes, and the intensity is much greater than just being a full blown cardio workout. You can achieve good stamina and muscle endurance with crossfit. The whole idea around it is to be good in the 10 components of fitness, not just great in a couple.

60 mile bike races and 6000ft of climbing is more than just being "in shape". Those are for people that train specifically for those events, which is something totally different.

Thus, why would high performance athletes, the vast majority of whom are not vegans to begin with, change their diet for no significant advantage in performance.

Vegan diet is HEALTHIER.

That is the point of this whole fucking thread. Not your off-track confusion, where you are injecting a bunch of ill-informed anecdotal based opinions.

Mook wanted to lose wieght. You lose weight by taking in fewer calories. But, if you already have a relatively poor nutrient supplying diet - as the vast majority of Americans do - and then you reduce your calories - that is poor for health long-term. That's is the key message I am trying to get across. I don't really care about your training regimines and associated superstitions.

Vegetables typically have virtually no fat, which is good for your cholesterol, which is good for your heart. That's the bottom line.

I say "typically" because vegetable oil is fat, and there are trace amounts of fat in vegetables. Some have a lot, like olives.

Calm down there, Nancy.

Mook wanted to lose weight. I said it depends what the goals for losing weight are. If the goal is to lose weight just to get skinny, go ahead and just cut calories. If the goal is to lose weight for looks and / or athletic performance, you have to do more than just cut calories. In the latter case, vegan is going to be a tough way to do it.

Try following along next time, or improve your reading comprehension.

Like I said... it is great for fitting high intensity workouts into a short amount of time. Some people can handle a lot more, and do both high intensity training and endurance training.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Like I said, it depends on what your definition of "in shape" means.

Endurance training is involved in crossfit workouts.

Being fit in the 10 components of fitness is indeed "in shape". I just think you don't have a great idea what crossfit is, not too mention your definition of being "in shape" is just odd.

Endurance training is involved in crossfit workouts.

haha. No. See above about what real endurance training is.

I did the regional crossfit competition. It took 7 minutes. It was intense. But had nothing to do with endurance.

not too mention your definition of being "in shape" is just odd.

Tell that to elite level triathletes, runners, cyclists, swimmers, cross-country skiers, etc etc.

Just because you can't hope to do it, doesn't mean it is "odd".

haha. No. See above about what real endurance training is.

Yeah, it would take mostly strict endurance training to work up to that(60 mile bike race), while mainly staying away from strength and power workouts. Cool?

You realize there are a million different WODs? Seriously, this means nothing. Don't even know why you posted it.

You're an idiot. Look at you equating elite level triathletes to simply being "in shape". There is a huge fucking difference. Stop comparing apples to oranges.

No. I do strength and power workouts along with the 60mile bike race training. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Last time I checked, most people would agree that elite level triathletes are "in shape". Just because you have lower standards doesn't mean you are "in shape".

I accept your defeat. If it helps you feel better, keep throwing out the personal insults.

No shit elite level triathletes are in shape. But you're trying to say if you aren't an elite level triathlete, you're not in shape, and that's a pretty ridiculous statement to make. It's like saying you aren't a great basketball player because you're not as good as Michael Jordan. It's stupid.

While everyone else was talking about simple training and nutrition for the average person who isn't training to be the next Lance Armstrong, you've manged to turn this into a dick measuring contest. Love the internet.

Crossfit for the people that are in here that are overweight would in fact be whipped into shape. Try to understand the context next time.

I've lost 40 pounds in the last 2 and a half years by eating better, riding my bike to work/running, and by doing the workouts available on Comcast On Demand (I like me some Cindy Whtmarsh).

How about lifting weights for a nice physique? Thats what I do and it works!

Alright, here we go....... I'm glad this thread is here. I am very overweight and have just recently admitted it to myself. I knew I was, but kept trying to tell myself I wasn't. I'm pretty active. Still play b-ball every now and then and get up and down the court fine. I just turned 38, I'm 5'10"-297lbs!!!! My wife had go have a physical and the doctor said everything is normal(cholesterol, blood pressure).... right where it should be.....besides the fact that I'm 100 lbs overweight! Nobody in my family is overweight first of all. I know exactly how and when I put on all the lbs. When I was 22, 1994, I got out of the Army I was 182lbs. Moved out on my own and struggled at a minimum wage job for 5 years. I was always dead broke and went with what was cheapest, fast food. Everyday at least once I ate that greasy shit! And my biggest problem was soda. I used to have a couple double BigGulps a day. I still played ball 3 or 4 times a week, so I think I was fooling myself that I was in shape. I am the same weight right now that I am from back in '99 when I met my wife, but I don't eat anywhere near like what I used to and have recently in the past 6 months cut out soda. I admit I do have Diet every now and then. I kept telling myself I needed to get in shape, but didn't think I was that bad. My arms and legs look like they did back in highschool and the Army, it's just my stomach. I have really broad shoulders and when I tell people what I weigh the say, "no way!" I have had a membership at 24hr for the past few years and when I am not traveling( which is rare) I get down there and hop on the stairs. I ALWAYS feel great when I do, I can just never keep it up. I don't want to blame being married with 2 young kids and my career for me not getting my ass back in shape, but I think I do. It's become a running joke for Rice and other guys to crack on me about my weight and I kinda have just blown it off, but I think it might be finally starting to get to me. I appretiate this thread being started and look forward to any of you guys who have serious ideas or suggestions to help me get my ass in shape.

I drink. A lot. But I still use my bowflex almost everyday, do cardio 3-5 times per week (tennis, b-ball, running, biking in no set pattern). I also eat real healthy (I think). Mostly chicken, fish, brown rice, fruits and veggies, red meat about twice a week. What I'm wondering is if its possible to lose weight and build muscle while drinking heavily 5-7 nights per week. Anyone have any insight?

I've been doin extra work on my abs lately, cause I'm happy with the way the rest of my body looks except for my beergut. I really love a good buzz...so is it possible to lose the gut without quittin drinkin? Im 28 and have played sports my whole life, BTW. Any insight would be appreciated!

HCP, if you make all your posts that long you will burn 1000 calories per day.

Are you an alcoholic?

Dude, find someone who you can workout with on a regular basis. It'll help you stay motivated and keep you going to the gym on a regular basis. I highly recommend lifting weights if you aren't already. Maybe look into a personal trainer?

Are you an alcoholic?

I'm not physically addicted. I don't get withdrawls if I dont drink, and I don't drink if I have important shit goin on, but by most people's definition...ya probably.

It's just a matter of time though, man. I have a couple of friends who are alcoholics and drinking pretty much controls their lives. Do you know where to get help?

Ya I know where to get help. This will sound like a cop out, but I play poker professionally, and when I'm playing live it actually helps me to have a few drinks at the table. But I'm still curious if anyone can tell me whether its possible to lose weight without quitting drinkin.

Permanent Weight Loss requires a lifestyle change. Eat more frequently, exercise regularly, and control proportions. I usually have one or two meals a week when I eat whatever I want to, but generally I try to eat clean, lean foods. Quit Fast Food.

I drink with the guys a couple times a month. To burn it off, I do cardio the following day. :)

just read your whole novel.. good for you HCP. I hope it all works out for you!
