Lost My Job Today

ABM, best of luck with Kroger!

If that doesn't work out, my employer has a bunch of openings in Georgia for client service, tech support, relationship management and general management-type jobs. Most are in Alpharetta or Norcross but some are in Augusta. Go to www.adp.com , click on 'Careers' and make your way to the Job Search screen.

My dad just found out he lost his job today as well. He has been working at Freightliner for 25 years. The last day is June 2010, two years before he's eligible for retirement.

I blame this solely on Republicans.

That definitely sucks man. My dad also works at Freightliner and has been doing so for about 35 years. He is pretty torn up about it since it basically has been his life.

Then you have an oversimplistic perception of reality and the economy, specifically.

I, too, am unemployed. I gave notice like a month ago and have been chilling a couple of weeks. I allegedly have a job offer coming in from a day-long interview I did Thursday, but until/unless it comes, I'm gonna be kind of on pins and needles.

Back to ABM: you'll land on your feet, man! Keep a positive attitude and keep talking to people. :)

Agreed.

A more concise analysis of the meltdown will place the blame squarely on the shoulders of those overzealous Mods at over BBF.com.

Unless you have evidence (which I may well) that Republicans own an Evil machine that causes all the pain and suffering in the world.

Then it is perfectly rational to blame this, and a lot of other stuff, on the Republicans.

;)

The mods @ BBF.com broke into my car last night and stole my stereo!

I'm willing to bet that the CEO's at Daimler are Republicans. They wanted cheaper labor and tax breaks and moving the company to Mexico will do just that. The tax breaks for having an income of over $250,000 wasn't enough, so they decided to outsource. Typical Republican garbage.

I'm sure the mods from BBF were somehow involved as well. I blame them for the worlds economic problems in general.

I'm a republican and I outsource! :ghoti:

(edit: technically, when you go out of the country, its called offshoring...outsourcing could be domestic).

I'm not sure in this case but I can tell you that Portland political leaders are very anti business which is what is needed to create more and jobs. I can't see very many large or even mid size businesses moving into Portland and it has nothing to do with republicans.

That would have been Petey. Lucky he didn't take the whole car. He threatens to take mine all the time.

No one believes that. You drive a Prius.

Maybe being unemployed will be the new wave of the future . . . you pay less taxes that way.

Pay less taxes? Heck you get a rebate for taxes you never paid. It's a pretty sweet gig if you ask me.

mccain actually proposed to not tax unemployment benefits. I find it funny that government taxes unemployment benefits at all. what a fucked up system we have.

It makes sense if you assume that someone will eventually get off unemployment, as the unemployment counts as taxable income for that year. And it makes a difference if you get off UE and make $50K the rest of the year or make $300K.

Yeah, there is widespread abuse in unemployment benefits. I'm a republican, I can only assume they're all moochers!

Interesting that you make this statement in a thread where poeple have posted they lost their jobs. Today in the paper they announced freightliner is closing in Oregon and 700 people losing their jobs . . . many of them young family parents who rely on their monthly paycheck to make ends meet.

Do you think these freightliner workers are moochers when they apply for unemployment?

No. I was being facetious.

When are the cuts happening?

Severence Packages? I hear you ';re supposed to get 2 weeks pay for every year you've been at the company? is that standard?

job cuts suck though. I just know firsthand experience of people who have abused the unemployment system...mainly several ex-coworkers.

because if you create a lot of shit jobs and shit companies, the dot-bomb bubble bursts. "job creation" is stupid if its just to create jobs.

That is true. So how is it that creating jobs in the alternative energy field would be a bad thing? We are always going to need energy. We are always going to need transportation that uses alternative fuels once it is established.

Secondly I would point out, that a lot of the jobs that are being lost, are not being lost due to factories "shutting down due to lack of business". They are shutting down due to the jobs being shipped to other countries.

Today Freightliner shut down it's Portland production plant and sent the jobs to Mexico.

Now that being said, you look at what the two canidates have said they would do, one of the things Obama says he would do is give tax credits to companies that keep jobs here, and produce jobs here. $3000 per job. John McCain on the otherhand, has said he will just give them a tax break period, with no incentive. They get it if they keep jobs here, or ship them overseas.

Which one makes sense to you?

What makes sense is having businesses run as efficiently as possible. Again, I am an individual that offshores work and markets offshored work to small business in order to cut down costs. So obviously, I do not hold much credence in the blind creation of jobs in the USA. Clinton put forth job creation programs, and I believe that much of the overhiring was partly to blame for the dot-bomb boom. Too many people with too many stupid ideas, and eventually too many layoffs.

What will tend to happen is companies will get tax write offs, then eventually as the employees are not as profitable, they will eliminate them down the line as they realize that the American Worker truly is not the best in the world. Then they have to deal with Unions and all that other bullshit.

If by "anti-business" you mean they don't think taxpayers should subsidize most businesses then you have a point.

If you mean something else, then, well...you probably don't.:dunno:

Yes on your first point and especially in today's economy there is no way a business will move here with the Oregon tax structure without some incentives. I know it doesn't sound fair but that is just how it works and if the taxpayers don't want to pay then there will be more businesses moving out and none or very few moving in.
I also think the current mayor doesn't help. You need a mayor that will kiss the businesses ass and know how to work with them.

Wow, I just read this thread! Sorry to hear that ABM! I thought the new email address you sent me just meant you had a different job?
