Luke Freakin Babbitt could not play in the WNBA!!!!!

I think he actually looked pretty good. Maybe my expectations are just much lower now.

If he had hit a couple of wide-open shots that he had, it would have been a good game for him. If he cannot hit those shots in the long run, he's not going to last in the league. If he can, then he'll be at least a rotation player.

Fluidity and dexterity are arguably the most important athletic traits an NBA player can possess. Luke strikes me as the kind of guy that probably looks great in athletic testing when he doesn't also have to concentrate on dribbling a basketball. Just with my eyes he looks like he has a long loping gait when he runs and he really takes his time gathering himself when he goes up to shoot off the dribble or when he jumps.

Not exactly looking real good for his future, but then again I think the first thing I said when we drafted him was, "FML, Luke Babbitt?!"

EDIT:

close enough.

Plus he's one of those guys that is just annoying to look at.

I never thought much of him at all, but he showed his versatility well last night. If he hits those wide open shots he's on par with Hayward.

Except Hayward doesn't look like a water buffalo trying to run up and down the floor and his shot actually looks smooth.

Why does it matter whether a player looks like a water buffalo or looks smooth? All that matters is what he accomplishes.

so luke doesnt hit threes ever..... even wide open ones.

and he sucks at everything else.

not sure what there is left to say other then he should be cut

Hayward doesn't impress me much. When Luke and Hayward were guarding each other (at least I think they were guarding each other?) they were able to do some things, but I have doubts either could cover a three legged chair, so I'm not sure there's much to take away from that. Beyond that I saw a lot of bumbling, stumbling and fumbling ... not very NBA-ish to me.

Because most players who man that position are actually athletic and will be able to easily stay with him. I guess it doesn't matter though because until he actually hits an outside shot, his man will cheat way off him to double one of our other guys.

I don't understand why people are harsh on the op. Babbitt sucks no matter how you try and look at it. He was drafted because he was supposed to be deadly from the perimeter. The only good we saw was some post baskets. That's not why we drafted him. He will be a liability on the defensive end and his man can go off him to double the post. He needs to go. Terrible player imo

I didn't see the game, so he could be horrible.

However, I fail to see the logic in "yeah, he was productive, but not in the way we drafted him for, so CUT HIM and his guaranteed 2 more years on his contract!"

honestly theres prob kids in jr high that could play better at the nba level then luke. thats dreadful he was.

if his specialty is shooting, then kp should never be allowed to draft again.

So if oden ever came out of injury hell and started playing, only shooting from the perimeter, getting no rebounds or blocks; you wouldn't want him gone?

So what? KP is long gone and Babbitt is almost certainly irrelevant in the Blazers short term and long term plans. Most of us agree with you that he sucks, but what of it?

I think the comparison would be "if Oden all of a sudden just became Amare Stoudamire, a no-D, 25ppg scorer, would I just cut him with two years left on his rookie-level deal?" No. No I wouldn't. I think that would be insanely dumb.

6'9 guys with hops and a few skills generally play in the post. Maybe they can shoot and play a "stretch 4." Babbitt wasn't drafted for his defense. To have someone say "he's scoring, but not where he's supposed to! Cut him!" seems ridiculous to me. How did he get on the block to score? Did Nate tell him to camp out at the 3pt line and he disobeyed orders?

You're buying into the troll schtick.

It maybe god playing that role, but what he said is truth. And that isn't a fair comparison since Babbitt has no chance getting as much points playing the post as he would getting a wide open 3. That's the issue. If he has no range then he becomes a liability to his team. He doesn't have drive power or the respect to be respected in the post. Basically he is worthless.

I just don't want him to take a roster spot from a player better than him. So what if he's guaranteed.

I wonder if he can be converted to a power forward. He has size and bulk and knows how to play a position, he just isn't the swiftest footed out there and has trouble guarding on the perimeter.

I say put him on a year of steroids (hit the weight room hard) and let him play PF Craig Smith style. Does Babbit have that in him?

What do you think? (And be honest.)

Who are you clearing the roster spot for and with what money are you going to pay this person to fill it? :sigh:

Is luke 'freaking' babbit, our Adam morrison!?

No . . . but I think that is his best shot at staying in the NBA. I don't see him being an NBA SF or SG . . . unless he somehow turns it around and becomes deadly from the outside, even then I don't ever see him being able to create his own shot from outside.

But maybe a small quick power forward who can hit from the perimeter. If he can learn to bang and defend the post . . . ok maybe not.

LOL.

I guess I just don't see what all the fuss is about. Babbitt was 14th on the team in minutes and 15th in MPG last season. Sean Marks played more minutes, even though he was traded halfway through the season. Babbitt and Armon are bascially are 12th and 13th guys on our roster. It doesn't really matter of they suck. They won't see the floor except during blowouts. It's not like there were a lot of absolute studs taken right after Babbitt, or we gave up a lot to get him.

If he improves, he could maybe someday be a 9th or 10th man. That's his upside. If not, he will be out of the league after his rookie contract. Big deal. I don't get the hatred. It's not like we've pinned our champsionship hopes on Luke Babbitt. How about we give the kid a break and actually start pulling for him. Sure, other than the fact that he playes for our favorite team (shouldn't that be enough), he hasn't done much to deserve our support. But, on the flip side, he certainly hasn't done anything to deserve the irrational hatred he gets in this forum. I've never really cared about Babbitt one way, or the other, until now. The harsh treament he's received in this forum has made him an underdog in my eyes. My expecations are low. So, any positive contributions he makes, or any improvement he shows, will be unexpected surprises. Go Luke!

Irrational hatred? This is the first real glimpse we've seen of the guy. I think people are just voicing their opinions on how bad he truly is. I guess people had hopes that he would be better after some of the good praise he received last year from practice, but the guy just really isn't very good. He was drafted because he was supposed to be a shooter, but he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Besides, he has that annoying hair and he's just one of those guys that's irritating to watch. He reminds me of Dan Dickau or Luke Jackson. Two other scrubs that were supposed to be able to shoot.

lol, i was going to say something about his hair. I think its the reason why he cant hit the rim on a good majority of his shots...

And hating him because of his hair style is rational????

Seriously, look at the title of this thread and some of the posts. What the fuck is everyone getting so upset about after one preseason game. Big deal, our 13th man sucks. Let it go and move on.
