Madagascar on the brink of civil war

I like to think that I keep up with international politics pretty well and I had no idea that Madagascar was this close to going into a civil war. I guess it's just another example of mainstream media ignoring an entire continent.

It's amazing just how quickly an entire country can deteriorate like this. Just look at the time line, on Jan 24th it when this all started and during the last two months soldiers have switched sides, the defense minister has been ousted, the army general has been ousted, and there is now a serious power struggle between the president and the opposition lead who has gone into hiding.

The Madagascan army is moving against the president in a coup attempt. The current fear is that the standoff between the opposition and the president will end in an all out bloodbath after the opposition leader called for the presidents arrest.

The Madagascan president stepped down today and handed over power to the military. Andry Rajoelina has installed himself in the presidential place and has declared himself the new president.
