Maybe you're talking about just your little neighborhood, and have never really ventured outside of it.

Less than 10% of the world population owns a computer, and less than 1% of the world population has uncensored internet access.

The fact is that the majority of electronics contain coltran, the majority of which comes from slave mines in the DRC. The component parts are then assembled in China or Taiwan via sweatshop labor. It's nice that a company like the above exists and is supporting American labor and local economies, but there is no getting around the injustice that goes into building our electronics (all electronics, not just apple products.)

Until just a few years ago, Australia was the main source and DRC wasn't even a blip on the radar. Now the 2 countries have flip-flopped due solely to computer companies suddenly changing their supply source because the US no longer cares if products are bathed in the blood of slaves so long as they get rich in the process. None of that savings has been passed on to the customer.

Having done development work in Africa, I can tell you the internet is the number one source getting anything done over there. But that's just my experience. How does it work in Beautiful Central Oregon?
