Magnus Hellberg called up from Hartford

Only this idiotic franchise could manage to knock their own goalie out of action AGAIN!

Alain Vigneault says that there is swelling around Henrik Lundqvist's eye but that injury isn't "too serious."

Lundqvist will see a specialist this afternoon to check on the swelling.

Isn't too serious...get your butt in that goal on Saturday Hank. Sorry I am taking such a hard line stance here, but if it isn't too serious, and he has two days off, and it's only some swelling...get your butt in there on Saturday. That's it.

I bet they called up Hellberg for practice right now. Doesn't work well with only 1 goalie.

Throw a steak on the damn thing and get your butt out there.

There was no update on his status for game two but Vigneault said that Lundqvist has to practice tomorrow in order to play on Saturday.

And McDonagh has been ruled out of game two already. So maybe game 3...we'll see.

Need to win game two...all I'll say.

  • On Henrik, "he has been checked by our doctors. At this time we don't feel that it's anything too serious. There is a little bit of swelling near the eye and around the eye. He will see another specialist this afternoon and we will have more news tomorrow."
  • On Hellberg being recalled, "it's in case we get some bad news but we don't feel that way, it's just a matter of where the injury is and being on the safe side and making sure he is alright."
  • Will he have to practice tomorrow to play on Saturday, "Yes. It's an afternoon game, so...."
  • Are you preparing for Raanta or Lundqvist, "I will wait until I get the results from his examination this afternoon and from there we will have a better idea."
  • Is the specialist in NY, "no, he's here, he will see a doctor here."

Unless something comes back unexpected from the specialist, Hank better be in goal Saturday.

Maybe it's just fishing for a silver lining, but I think it's somewhat encouraging that he wasn't set back to New York.

I agree Prod. EVERYTHING I have read says not too serious. With that as the backdrop I think he should play Saturday.

He's lucky Staal didn't take his eye out.

The problem with eye injuries even thought they may not be serious they might cause vision problems... Vision is essential for goalies

I don't think he got hit directly in his eye though. Eye area and maybe grazing the eye, but certainly not a direct stick to the eye, otherwise this wouldn't be a discussion right now.

Malkin practiced today as well. Figure he is back game 4 or 5. McDonagh I think game 3 or 4.

Need to win game 2 IMO. Hard to see us beating the Pens 4 of 5 if we lose tomorrow considering how they are playing (16 of 17 that have mattered if they win game 2) and how we have played.

Need Hank in that game.

Even with Hank in goal, these Rangers
are pitful......so, anybody ready to put
this pig on the pit?

AV is a coach I find hard to root for.
I expect many changes on this team.

Andrew Gross (Twitter): Henrik Lundqvist first Ranger on the ice.

Andrew Gross (Twitter): No Magnus Hellberg at practice, either, which is a really good sign about Henrik Lundqvist's status.

I can finally breathe.

Henrik Lundqvist was the first Ranger on the ice in Pittsburgh today for practice. (NYR)

Lundqvist and Antti Raanta are on the ice working with Benoit Allaire. Magnus Hellberg is not on the ice. (Gross, Zipay)

The Rangers said yesterday that they didn't believe the injury to be "too serious" and that he was seeing an eye doctor later in the day.

Agreed Prod. I figured he was going to play. Happy to see it pretty much officially.

He's playing. Hank game time decision, but I'm sure he's playing.

Hopefully Malkin is NOT playing.

  • "Today I felt pretty good. The big thing for me was yesterday to go and see a specialist and know that there is no damage to the eye and it's just the swelling around the eye that made it uncomfortable. We are taking it day by day but the practice was good, the vision was good. It's more the swelling around the eye that affects it a little bit but I am very pleased with the way that it felt."

  • No vision problems, "It's a lot better. After the hit it was very blurry and hard to focus and that is why I left the game and that night it improved a lot and had a good feeling yesterday but you want to make sure when you see the specialist that there is no damage to the eye. The way the stick hit me, I am just very happy and lucky that nothing bad happened there. For 20/30 seconds I had some really bad thoughts going through my head, just the way that it all happened and it was very scary actually and everything just happened so far. Just happy it's nothing serious."
