Celtics Rumors: Malcolm Brogdon Has 'Significant' Injury That Will Prevent Any Trade

Boston Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon is reportedly dealing with a "health issue" that will likely make it impossible for the team to trade him this offseason.

Appearing Thursday on Get Up, ESPN NBA insider Brian Windhorst said the following:

"Malcolm Brogdon, who was the key piece going from Boston to the Los Angeles Clippers in this [canceled] deal, Brogdon has a health issue, a health issue that as I understand, is so significant, that not only can the Celtics not do this trade, there's probably no Malcolm Brogdon trade that they can do in the short term."

The Celtics reportedly planned to trade Brogdon this offseason before agreeing to send guard Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies late Wednesday night.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Celtics' "clear intent" was originally to trade Brogdon and keep the guard trio of Smart, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.

Instead, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski (h/t ESPN's Tim Bontemps), the Celtics agreed to a three-team trade with the Grizzlies and Washington Wizards, sending Smart to Memphis and bringing center Kristaps Porziņģis to Boston from Washington.

Celtics' Malcolm Brogdon: Healthy to start training camp


Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said Tuesday that Brogdon is completely healthy heading into training camp, Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reports.

It was reported that Brogdon may need offseason surgery to repair a partial tendon tear in his right elbow/forearm, but he was ultimately able to clear the issue on his own and should be full go for training camp. There was also concern that Brogdon had grown disgruntled with the organization after nearly being traded, but the point guard appears to have put that issue behind him as well. With Marcus Smart no longer in the picture, there should be more minutes in the backcourt available for Brogdon in 2023-24, but Derrick White will still be Boston's starting point guard.

“The LA Clippers are reportedly in the hunt for the defensive stalwart, but they have continued to engage the Celtics in trade talks for Brogdon throughout the offseason,” The Athletic’s Jared Weiss wrote Friday. “… After a deal surrounding Brogdon and Kristaps Porzingis fell just short of the finish line in June, the organization has worked to repair the relationship with the Sixth Man of the Year while continuing to explore trade options in the case that bridge is too singed to be repaired.”

The Clippers "have continued to engage" the Boston Celtics in trade talks for point guard Malcolm Brogdon, according to The Athletic's Jared Weiss.

Over the summer, the Celtics tried to include Brogdon in a three-team trade with the Los Angeles Clippers and Washington Wizards for veteran Kristaps Porziņģis.

The deal fell through after the Clippers expressed concerns about Brogdon's health. Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe reported at the time that the franchise backed out of the trade due to "not having time to complete a physical exam."


ESPN's Brian Windhorst later reported that Brogdon was dealing with a "health issue" that would likely make it impossible for the Celtics to trade him this offseason.

This also brings an end to the Brogdon saga, centered on his frayed relationship with the organization following the Porziņģis trade talks.

While Brad Stevens worked to repair it over the past few months, reintegrating a player after they were widely presumed to be traded presented a significant challenge. The Sixth Man of the Year spent the summer wanting a new start elsewhere but did not want to hold out at training camp, according to team and league sources who were granted anonymity so they could speak freely.

After the Celtics’ Game 7 elimination in the Eastern Conference finals back in May, Brogdon was one of the veterans who was publicly critical of the team’s approach and effort. Following exit meeting discussions, Brogdon was under the impression he was part of the team’s long-term plans, according to team sources. After a few weeks of rumors that Boston could trade one of its point guards for a forward, he was on the verge of being traded to the LA Clippers in the original framework of the Porziņģis deal.

But as the ill-fated agreement was coming together, rumors began to circulate that Brogdon required surgery on the partially torn elbow tendon that ended his season early, and reports suggested there might have been more injury concerns that could put his long-term health in jeopardy. Because he was planning to simply rehab the elbow and the other areas of concern in his lower body felt relatively fine, according to sources briefed on his recovery plan, Brogdon became increasingly frustrated.

Late on June 21, as the midnight deadline for Porziņģis’ player option approached, the Clippers and Celtics were unable to finalize the deal. Porziņģis was not willing to push his option deadline another 24 hours and was about to hit free agency, per team and league sources, and Los Angeles could not complete its review of Brogdon’s medical situation in time.

Brogdon was scheduled to fly to Los Angeles for an examination of his elbow the next day, but Boston could not afford to wait and pivoted to trade Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal that sent the Celtics Porziņģis and two first-round picks. Smart and Danilo Gallinari, who was sent to Washington in the three-team trade, also were under the impression after their exit meetings that they were a part of the team’s future plans, according to league sources.

The disconnect with Brogdon was exacerbated when Joe Mazzulla told reporters that White would be the starting point guard following Brown’s contract extension news conference on July 26. Brogdon, who has a strong relationship with White, anticipated the Smart trade would leave the door open for a competition to earn the starting point guard spot. Right after Mazzulla said White would start that day, he was asked about the situation with Brogdon.

“I think anytime you are in a situation like that and you are in a relationship, you just have to take some small steps into it,” Mazzulla said. “There is a healing process, there is a listening process and to see where we are at and where we have to get to. We’ve had some conversations as an organization but at the same time, we understand the situation that it was and as the healing process goes on, we will move forward as well as you can.”

I think he’s gonna be traded. It would just be so easy to send him to LAC.

Regardless of who our trading partner is, I hope we can include OKC or Utah in the deal and get some of their excess draft picks. They both have more than they know what to do with. I am looking forward to bundling a couple of these or more and moving up in future drafts.

We are done with needing quantity. We now need quality. Getting a quantity of draft picks is the best want to get that quality.
