Allen will sign non-guaranteed contract today. Cleaves reportedly already in camp.

Camp roster usually has five players with non guaranteed or partially guaranteed contracts. The Nets appear close to that number, with Rod Benson, Robert Hite, Malik Allen and Mateen Cleaves.

Glad we were able to get a commit from him. A lot of times quality players pass us up because they know the shots won't be there with Krstic, VC and RJ. Good Williams insurance in case Williams is really behind. A bigger body Moore, can hit the spot up jumpers a must in any offense with players who attack the basket.

now this sounds right. not allan houston.

allen & cleaves are pretty good players. not disappointed in those signings at all. (well, except for the fact that we didn't get better, but oh well)

Both better end of bench material than we have now. Great pickups.

I've always liked Cleaves. He's not bad to have at the end of the bench, like you guys said.

I like Malik Allen more than Cleaves. Cleaves has always been a huge dissapointment, I actually had high hopes for him coming out of MSU.

I really like the Malik Allen signing. Mateen Cleaves isn't bad ethier.

Pleased with both of the signings.

Malik Allen is horrible. He is like a tall shooting guard. He's an Eddy Curry esque rebounder, he doesn't play good defense, and he just chucks up shots which he hits at a subpar rate. Its sad that he was starting for the Bulls just 2 years ago.

I'm really surprised that Mateen Cleaves is still hanging around.

Both are good vet guys to have at the end of the bench and can step in a play some minutes in case of an injury. I like them both.

When Marcus Williams is the backup PG, Cleaves has a chance

One reason Allen may not be able to get a better deal is that on March 7, he was hospitalized for an irregular heart beat. They dont like that in Chicago.

He's probably just coming the Nets for the physical

I'd rather have Malik Allen than Illic. Rod Benson looks like a fun player, but I don't see how he gets on this roster.

I hope Malik makes the team, being the 'Nova homer I am. Very nice guy. I actually had a Geography class with him.

Plus, he's married to a a girl who I graduated with... Kara Saylor, class of '98. 2 years older than him.

Here's a pic of herfrom my 'Novayearbook, if anyone cares:

the same way shirley and burke got on the suns roster...by being funny guys, most likely good for chemistry.

But that only goes so far with a full roster:

1. Kidd

2. Vince

3. RJ

4. Krstic

5. Magloire

6. Marcus

7. Antoine

8. Boki

9. Boone

10. Collins

11. Hite

12. Deathblow

13. Sean Williams

14. Illic

I'm not missing anyone am I? I could see Illic being dropped and picking up Malik. Then maybe we add a 15th, but we know how this ownership hates the luxury tax

Nice, thanks for the info DJ.

Malik Allen is the type of guy you send at Shaq, Dwight Howard when your rotation bigs get in foul trouble. He plays his heart out and can actually outplay some of the bench bigs, what more can you ask from a 10,11th man?

If you pass the Nets physical, you automatically qualify for NASA flight training. Thats what I hear.

Two words...Donny Marshall

Actually, as a Bulls fan who saw Malik play a lot of his games for them, I think you guys are getting a very good backup/role player. He's something of a black hole (doesn't pass much), but he can hit shots from decent range. He should steal some of Jason Collins' minutes.

13 guaranteed contracts...plus partial guarantee to Hite (a mere $20K)...and non guaranteed contracts to Benson, Allen and Cleaves plus whoever else is out there in Secaucus we dont know about. A training camp contract is a non guaranteed contract...whether its Benson or Allen. Allen and Cleaves cost more, but the contract is the same...not guaranteed til you make the club.

NBA teams gave out 15 partially guaranteed contracts last summer...with guarantees ranging from $7.5K to $150K...and exactly none of the 15 made the opening night rosters. A few went to the D-League and eventually got called up. So dont put too much faith in Hite's partial guarantee.

I still expect another signing of a PG and I would not be surprised if Ilic and Robinson were bought out or traded by opening night. Things are still in flux, not set yet.

And with the Nets, by our calculations at NetsDaily, about $218K under the cap, ANY pickup at 14 or 15 would cost tax money unless they can get creative. But again, Nets went into the last two seasons more than $2M over the tax threshold and didnt have to pay anything because they made smart trades with teams under the threshold. It wont be as easy this year with fewer teams under the threshold and those teams much closer to it than last year. That, I think, is why they want to go into this season either under the threshold or only minimally over it.

If he is a black hole, he will take Magloire's minutes since he doesnt pass much either...while Collins passes quite well in the Nets offense.

The Nets need a reliable, defensive minded combo guard who can shoot.

If there isn't anyone out there who fits this description and represents an upgrade over Robert Hite, I prefer they sign nobody.

ya, i agree, and i hope hite can fill that position next season successfully

His shooting % is deceptive. I remember sooo many times wanting to yell at the TV because he wouldn't pass, but he made the shot. You want to see Gordon or Deng shoot, ya know?

Not many of those guys left. Roger Mason may come closest to that description.

Maybe she should have married Scafidi. He's a doctor now and doing quite well.

I think the best hope is a midseason trade or a hail-mary vet's minimum guy who is bought out during the season.

Until then, there's always the chance Hite can give them something.

I will say that if Mateen Cleaves actually plays for the Nets this season, it's an indicator that something has gone very wrong.
