This is not really news; Manning's gender identity has been a back story all along.

It is in fact very common for pre-transition transwomen to bury themselves in hyper-masculine environments - military, overwhelmingly male professions, and so on in an attempt to "make it go away".

Whether she "betrayed her country" is a matter of opinion; some would say deliberate killing of civilians and covering it up betray American values. I guess it would be too much to ask to have a reasoned debate on the topic without sexual insult.

You should definitely listen to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast. He just did one on the Spanish American War recently. All I will say is that the role that Roosevelt and William Randolph Hearst played in the lead up to that conflict is pretty amazing.
