Manny Ramirez suspended 50 games for "Steroids"

Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned.

The test result and suspension is expected to be announced later today.


The suspension will cost Ramirez $7.7 million, or roughly 31% of his $25-million salary. Players in violation of baseball's drug policy are not paid during suspensions.

Ramirez is expected to attribute the test results to medication received from a doctor for a personal medical issue, according to a source familiar with matter but not authorized to speak publicly.

The Dodgers informed triple-A outfielder Xavier Paul this morning that he was being promoted to Los Angeles.

With the suspension taking effect with tonight's game against the Washington Nationals at Dodger Stadium, Ramirez will not be eligible to return to the team until July 3.

Ramirez would become the biggest star suspended under an oft-criticized major league testing program that started in 2003. He had been a model citizen since arriving in Los Angeles last August, following a stormy tenure with the Boston Red Sox.

Just heard it was a "masking agent" for steroids. Some drug usually for women that I guess helps steroid users get all their "chemicals" back to a normal looking order. Heard is on the local radio

its not proven he took steroids. its proven he took something that steroid users take to help the body. maybe his doctor really did prescribe him with that for a legit reason..manny isn't appealing so probably not.

I have heard this "masking agent" talk too, and apparently people have no idea what that means. A masking agent is something you take to interfere with the results of the drug test so the results are either negative or inconclusive. That is not what he was taking.

Yeah, Manny didn't have a masking agent in his body. He had a drug that restarts the body's production of testosterone, that steroid users take after a steroid cycle.

It's a banned substance itself, and since its legitimate medical use is a fertility drug for women, it's hard to believe that it was taken for a non-steroid-related reason. Manny is a confused type of person, but generally not that confused. He has a whole off-season to carry a child, you'd think he'd start trying to conceive later in the season, so that most of the adverse physical effects would happen between seasons.
