Interesting reading, I would sign Infante today as insurance for second, a replacement for Arod and or Super Sub. Cano's camp would have to take that as a shot across the bow. Cano in Seattle would be a business mistake, not a baseball mistake for Cano.

Just wrote about Cano in your other thread. At his point I agree. Sign Infante. Worse comes to worse he can play 3rd when Alex get suspended which we all know is going to happen. If they don't sign Cano they can use his money and sign a 2nd baseman, pitcher and outfielder.

The game of chicken may be commencing. Yanks said to be holding to 7 yrs and 175 mill (I wish they had held at 6) and telling cano go somewhere else if he doesnt like it. ...I said the same thing about Infante earlier...he can play just about any position and if the Yanx could sign him it would send a message to Cano. If Cano signs elsewhere Infante can play 2B...if Cano stays with the Yanx, Infante could play 3B in place of ARod. Infante does not walk much and his OBP is low but he also does not strike out a lot, which I like.

I don't know Marchand from Adam, but the M's might feel the need to overpay to get a player of Cano's caliber. Their payroll is sitting at 38M right now, the CEO (Lincoln) has said they've already budgeted for at least $95M, and could go higher if needed. It may not be the smartest dollar-for-dollar move, but it's better than signing Willie Bloomquist at 2/5.8M (oh wait, we just did that).

And if he keeps playing like the 5th place MVP, he can walk to first on all the groundouts he wants from an M's perspective. Our luck with getting FA's is well-known, and Raul Ibanez played enough OF last year to hit 29 home runs. Guh.

The one question about it isn't spending 25M/yr on a 30+ y/o player, it's that we've invested a lot of time and high draft picks in Ackley and Franklin at 2B, and they're relatively decent. Not that either of them is close to Cano as a bat, but the difference isn't 24M/yr more than what Franklin and/or Ackley can bring. Even putting Ackley back in CF would mean that Franklin becomes a super-sub who can really only play 2 positions.

I'm getting as tired of hearing about Cano as I am A-rod. In agreement with the aforementioned posts if Cano continues to hedge let him go, using the money for other needs. If Texas and St Louis could shed Hamilton and Pujols then the Yankees can shed Cano. Arod, Sabathia, and to a lesser degree Tex, burned the Yankees good and those lessons should be well remembered in the future.

...unfortunately, there is no ONE player that will put Seattle over the top, including Cano. I think the M's would be better served using that money elsewhere.

If they do end up letting Cano sign elsewhere, they really can't wait too long to replace him. I've been pushing for them to sign Infante NOW, and give themselves options at their price before everyone sees Cano actually walk, and hold the Yankees over the barrel. Since both 3B and 2B are needs now - Infante makes sense now IMO.
