Mark Cuban says "no rings" for Mavericks

Yes, the Mavs won like bosses. Cuban didn't even accept the trophy from Stern.

Cuban was being classy and letting the former owner of the Mavericks enjoy some of the celebration. It was a generous move, not a dick move.

Agreed. In the NBA, the term "rings" is synonymous with and used interchangeably with "titles" and "championships". It doesn't matter what Cuban wants. His players will want their rings.

Isn't a "maverick" someone who dances to the beat of their own drum? Someone who ventures out and acts out of the norm? I think it would be great if they do something else. Times change. Maybe everyone will follow Cuban's suit and then 50 years from now, kids will say "in the old days, all they got was a ring? What's so cool about that?"

And maybe they won't. Trophies haven't gone out of style. Olympic medals haven't gone out of style. The Stanley Cup hasn't gone out of style. I don't see anyone saying "in the old days, all they got was a cup? What's so cool about that?" 50 years from now and I don't see championship rings going out of style anytime soon, no matter what Cuban does.

Perhaps Cuban is going to hire Marquis Daniels' jeweler to make a replica of each player's head they can wear as a necklace.

I heard Cuban is having watches designed that will cost around $140,000 a piece. This was told to me by someone who knows someone, who knows someone, so I doubt it's true, but that's what I heard.

I think a watch is a great idea.

I'm sure Cuban will talk to the players and coaches to make sure the majority wouldnt prefer rings. He can afford to give them both!

But what if Cuban does get them a 140K ring, or something even more expensive. They will still have to pay tax on that, which is fine for dirk, but what about players less, like Mahinmi. They will feel compelled to keep it, but also have to spend as much as a new BMW in taxes for a keepsake.

He needs to get them their own music video -- superbowl shuffle style.

I don't think he can legally pay their taxes.

But even the marginal players are making more than probably all of us so don't cry if they are taxed on $100K jewelry. I mean there are folks in this country and the world facing much worse hardships.

He can pay their taxes, but that itself is taxable compensation.

Mavs are strongly opposed, per ESPN story.

They have said if Cuban wants to add something that's great, but they want rings. Does Cuban really want to piss off players and coaches right now?

Yep. And then he can pay their taxes for the taxes that he paid. And so on. :)

I don't know that he can/will do that ("can" under the CBA, I mean)... but he can do it from an IRS perspective.

Why not? if he was smart, he'd blow the team up now, because they're all too old to get there again.

That said, pissing off the champs because of something stupid like this is kinda silly. Piss them off by trading them for younger talent and picks.

Rings AND and an $8,000 vase like Kim Kardashian's.
