Martell Webster

HAHAHAHHAHA The next complaining victim is Webster! LMAO! First it was Roy, then it was Outlaw, then it was Fernandez, then it's Nate (Maybe some still think this) and now it's Webster. Who else? This is hilarious all this complaining after we just won 5 straight.

Maybe because Webster sucks and has not even come close to living up to his draft selection? The guy is a stiff.

Um yeah he shouldn't of never been a #6 pick. But he is still a Blazer and a very cheap one at that. But doesn't matter, if he turns the corner, there will be someone else to complain about huh?

I doubt he turns a corner. He's the same player now as he was a straight-out-of-HS rookie.

You can't really expect a young guy to mature at the normal rate when he's getting yanked thanks to Nate's flip flopping.
If I was a young prospect, I'd be terrified of being drafted by Nate, and then watching my crucial learning years go to waste rotting on the end of the bench.

Nate's gotta go!

I want him against players like Melo, Kobe, LJ and other stronger SFs around the league. I think Webster does a great job against those players. Also, how much is Webster getting paid? I think he's a good price for a role player.

I don't agree that his perimeter defense has been good... okay might be stretching it. He should get plenty of minutes for the next few months to show his real value. Up until now his career has been pretty consistent statistically reflecting an inconsistent & underwhelming player. We'll see if he's able to dial things up with a bigger role.

Your right. Holding your opponents to a combined PER of 10.0 isn't good defense...That's at the 3. When he's guarding the 2 spot it's 6.0 ....He's getting 1.43 Blocks per 48 and 2.8 steals per 48...These are all proof of GOOD DEFENSE...Or is that stretching it??

And amazingly enough with that melange of crappy stats, he's STILL outperforming the best wing player the opponent has (check out the +3.0 PER differential on 82games.com).

for 4+ million per year? From a guy in his early 20's? Yeah, I'll take that. And laugh at you for thinking otherwise. :)

Dude, what? Weren't Roy and Aldridge young prospects? Travis and Rudy as well? They didn't exactly rot at the end of the bench.

Nate has given Webster plenty of opportunities and starting gigs and he hasn't proven himself.

All I have to say is 12 games into a season after missing the last season with sporadic minutes.... ugh wants the point.. I say let him get used to playing again? but thats me, agree to disagree perhaps?:dunno:

Well, in playing 11 games so far (5 as a starter, against Joe Johnson, Melo, Battier, Gay) he's holding opposing players (generally the best wing player on a team) to a PER of 10. Ten. 34% below an "average NBA starter". Guess that qualifies as a stretched "okay". He's outperforming the players he's defending by 3 PER points. Say what you want about his offense, but it's ridiculously close-minded to bring up perimeter defense as a detriment of the only guy actually playing it on our team.
I've no idea where you're pulling these stats from. It seems near impossible to accurately sort out statistically what one player's defensive effect is as switches happen on most every single play. I do have an idea where I'm pulling my impression of his D being merely ok-ish though. Watching Melo torch him. Watching Jamal Crawford (who MW was "guarding") go by him at will. lol siting Shane Battier. I know you really really want him to do well, but I'm paying attention to what is happening not just hopes and dreams.
Agree. And I've been stating for 3 years now (though last year doesn't matter) that, if in 2005 Nate would've given Webster Outlaw's role and vice versa (giving Webs the green light to gun for the 2nd unit, and making Outlaw into a perimeter defender) our team would be much better, each of the two players would be better/more advanced players, and Webs would look like a 6th-man of the year candidate. I guess we'll finally see now. (Hopefully)
What would lead anyone to think that Martell can create the necessary space for an open look or that Travis has the physical agility to move his feet well enough to decently defend the perimeter? More power to Martell excelling in the opportunity before him, but history isn't projecting what we're hoping.

Webster plays SF, Outlaw plays PF. There role on this team is entirely different.
As far as I can tell both play the same role on offense the first 20 seconds of the clock or so. Both primarily stay on the perimeter and moving the ball for an open look for a shooter, taking open deep looks, and making the occasional backcut or drive to the hoop. Neither handles the ball much, sets screens, or ever posts up. The final 4 seconds of the clock Travis is (or now was) one of the primary Go! options, but other then that I see far more in common with their roles then not.

btw... no one is complaining about his salary. Personally I feel it about matches his performance... slightly below average.

I really wish Webster would be that nice 2/3 combo guard we need. He's a perfect fit, if he could just make better decisions with the ball in his hands. I really think he could be as important to us as a Kersey-type (Super high expectations), Ruben Patterson without the drama (Good expectations) or Augman (decent expectations). We need that defender type that gets assigned to guard the other team's most prolific perimeter scorer.

I am really a fan of Webster and only wish him the best in Portland.

Are you even watching the games or just looking at box scores? To say that he hasn't been good on defense is absolutely retarded. Sure he hasn't shot well. But he is playing solid defense and there is plenty of evidence to support it...I'm sure you'll find a way to say it's "wrong" or that defensive stats aren't concrete. Anybody that knows anything about basketball will tell you he is playing good defense. I would put anything on the fact that you have never played basketball at any level.

LOOK AT OPPONENT COUNTERPART PER 48 PRODUCTION (that means the man who he is assigned to on defense...do you understand that?)

what am I supposed to say to this crap??? Hows the steroid regimen going? If your next post isn't a perfuse apology for acting like a complete asswipe, welcome to ignore. Such pathetic personal vitriol reflects a whole lot more on who is dishing it out then who is on the receiving end.

talk hoops, keep the personal BS out or get lost
