OT Mass shooting at video game tournament in Jacksonville leaves multiple dead

It's the thrill of doing something very unusual that very few others have attempted. Me? No way. Might not be a bad backup.

Hell I went Boar hunting with a spear near Baguio once. Not so sure that was a smart thing to do either. When we found the Boar, and that sucker wanted a hunk of my ass on one of those tusks, I was dam sure of it.

People pistol hunt for the added challenge. Similar to bow hunting. Stalk your prey and place a difficult shot. These people aren't loudly stomping through the woods until a bear charges, at which point they begin blasting in its general direction praying for it to drop.
I've got a buddy who gets an elk every single year with a bow and arrow.

Then stop posting your personal opinion as a rebuttal to people saying hunting with pistols is a common thing. You very clearly implied otherwise.

...don't know who you are and really don't care, but don't presume to tell what I can and cannot say.

...Lanny I seriously doubt that if a griz is charging you and you've realized you missed, it may very well be too late to stop and reach for a rifle...this also is why I'd ask, "If you have the rifle, why use the pistol in the first place?"

Now you will get no disagreement from me on this point. You may not even get the rifle up in time if it's in your hands.

I've got a buddy who gets an elk every single year with a bow and arrow.

...I've tried bow and cross bow hunting...I realize it's a tougher hunt but it's just not for me...mainly for the same reason I mentioned earlier...when I pull the trigger I want to be 95% sure it's a kill shot...hell, half my shots are head shots...they don't go far.

Must have missed the memo. Just giving a Yankees fan the hard time that they deserve. No harm intended.

Ha!...I'm in Georgia, so I get plenty of abuse from Braves fans down here.
...fwiw, I don't know why the Yanx should deserve a hard time as opposed to any other team...unless it's based either on history or jealousy. :bgrin:

...I hunt with rifles only...I have a .243, a 7mm, and a .308 but for white tails I typically use the .243 ...my favorite stand is situated in a very high traffic area where my furthest shot won't be more than 75 yards...and I seldom miss and the deer never go far before collapsing....that's why a "clean shot" is so important to me. I'll shoot 8-10 does for every buck...I'm strictly in it for the meat..probaly still have 60 pounds in the freezer right now from last year.

....357?...meh, it's good for knocking down walls.

I sort of find it my favorite of my lot. .223, .243, .270, .308, 06, .338, 44mag, and the little .357. Loaded with Win296 and the 125gr jacket bullet, it will do a tad over 2300 fps. Of course that is the 18" barrel of the Browning lever action replica of the Model 92 Win.
The S & W 6" barrel is not near that fast, but it will use the same rounds to adequate effect. I find this to be my favorite to have on board, a handy pair.

I often just use the .38 specials in these.

So Georgia boars are bigger than my boars here?

I didn't mean it like that. I was just saying you are using your personal anecdotes as proof of the illegitimacy of pistol hunting when in fact it is indeed a common activity many people enjoy. People don't care if it's not popular with you and your friends, they do it anyway.

Actually JB, I think he was giving you his opinion or feeling, not a fact.:cool2:

...to be honest, I really don't know for sure but like I said earlier I have some monsters down here...500-600 pounds or so...they say they can get over a 1000 pounds...they're pretty smart and usually stay clear of humans but like I said, I saw one about 2 years ago that scared the hell out of me...and I was on a tractor planting food plots and should have felt safe.

If you're not sure, why raise the blood pressure in here by making a statement about it?

Here in Texas, our boars and wild hogs are, like many things here, big

...only conventional hand gun I have is an old 38 with a 4" barrel for "emergency"...I do also have a single shot .308 "hand cannon" with a 10" barrel and laser dot scope...for "critters". (raccoons, possum, armadillos, coyotes, etc.)...also have an ole Remington Nylon 66 22 caliber....great for plunking.
...my next purchase will be a used Marlin lever action 30-30 (side eject)

...whoah..."raise blood pressure"?...if this convo actually causes your BP to go up maybe you should consider some other form of entertainment...sounds like they have some big mouths in Tejas too.

Ah, the buggers are prone to jam. I had one. Get a Win 94, more reliable. But I really like the replica of the old 92. Better yet,
the .357 is then very near the 30 30.

Yeah but I'd be concerned about it getting stolen whenever I left my truck to go somewhere for more than a few seconds.
oh yeah..I would never leave mine.
We used the rack for when we went hunting, but you could drive through towns on the way with no problems. It was very common.

I have is an old 38 with

Well, to be completely honest, my old .38 is my favorite. The rounds for it will work in the rifle also, but I never loaded up this round to maximum capacity for use in the rifle. The 18" barrel would make a huge difference but I only did it with the .357 rounds.

...Win 98 ?...hmm, I'll check into it. I've used my brother in law's Marlin a couple of times and was surprised how accurate it was and the 30-30 is a good bit shorter than my other rifles and when shouldered, makes it much easier to get in and out of the deer stand.

"David Katz, the shooter who killed two people and wounded 10 others before taking his own life at an e-sports tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sunday, was in treatment for psychiatric issues at least as early as the age of 12, according to family divorce records.

Katz, who was 24, was prescribed a number of psychiatric medications, including an antipsychotic, and saw "a succession of psychiatrists," according to a 2006 letter from the father's attorney. A separate 2006 court filing states that a therapist said David had experienced a "psychiatric crisis."
CNN also obtained police records that show 26 calls for service to the police from the Katz family home in Columbia, Maryland, from 1993 to 2009, for issues ranging from "mental illness" to domestic disputes. At least two of those calls involved Katz arguing with his mother, though none of the reports provided to CNN show any physical violence. The Howard County Police Department declined to release the reports from a number of the incidents, citing statutory restrictions.
Since Sunday's shooting, the family has told investigators that David Katz suffered from mental health issues, according to a law enforcement source who described the family as being very cooperative with investigators. Both parents have worked for the federal government. Richard Katz is a NASA engineer employed at the Goddard Space Flight Center outside Washington, DC, according to an agency spokesperson. Elizabeth Katz was listed as an employee of the Food and Drug Administration at the time of her divorce.

Court documents state that Katz suffered emotionally as a child and was prescribed psychiatric drugs, including Lexapro, an antidepressant, and Risperidone, an antipsychotic medication sometimes used to treat schizophrenia. Katz's mother took him to see a number of psychiatrists as well as a social worker and art therapist, according to a 2006 letter from the father's attorney.
His father disputed the necessity of the drugs and a psychiatric evaluation sought by David's mother, suggesting that his son instead "attend a support group for middle school students." "Richard Katz has seen no evidence whatsoever of schizophrenia in David Katz," a motion from his father's lawyer said.
On one occasion, according to a document from the father's lawyer, Katz strongly reacted to the notion of going to an appointment and locked himself in the car. The boy was then "faced with the prospect of being put in handcuffs by the police."
The day after his 13th birthday, police were called to the mother's Columbia home to help with her son, because of "the volume of the television and his overall lack of respect toward her and his grandmother," according to a police report. The day after his 14th birthday, according to another police report, Katz called police to the home because his mother "keeps punishing him by taking away his video games."
Katz attacked fellow competitors at a Madden NFL video game tournament at the downtown shopping complex Jacksonville Landing after losing a game earlier in the day, according to survivor Alexander Madunic. He killed himself with his own handgun, according to Sheriff Mike Williams."

Now there are two sides of this. First off, he bought two guns legally in maryland even with his background. Not sure if they did any checks or what but obviously this was poorly handled and should not be this easy for a guy like this to get his hands on a gun. At the same time, he has a very clear history of issues with mental illness and those anti depressants don't really help people either. Also obvious he had a childhood filled with domestic violence and what not, more often than not that leads to a kid growing up with severe anger issues and other issues in general. So yeah, I would say for one we need stricter background checks, and people who know nothing about metal illness should probably do their research because there is A LOT of it in this country and most people dismiss it by calling these people crazy when in fact they have an issue that needs treated. This country can not keep prescribing people anti depressants and that's it. Even if he didn't have a gun, there are other tools he could of used to harm somebody whenever. None of it is okay but I also hate how these days any shooting gets political. It shouldn't.

You would like the 94 win 30 30. The model 92 Winchester was even a tad smaller but still with the 18" barrel. It was chambered for the 25 20, 32 20, and 44 40. All black power rounds. Sweet little guns but just a little light in velocity. Browning back in the 80s made the B92 as a knock off of the Win 92. Built in Japan, they did a nice job of creating the replica. They chambered them for the .357 and the 44mag rounds to replace the black powder rounds of 32 20 and 44 40. I had both and sold the 44mag, that rifle was not set up very well for accuracy. The hammer interferes with the sights for that round. The .357 is just right, quick and accurate. Loaded with the ammunition you can create, a light weight replacement for the 30 30 with 11 round in the tubular magazine. 13 rounds loaded with .38 specials but that would cut your effective range in half. A pretty damn effective defense weapon if they ever take away some better options.

finally a post that's on track...and I agree with your take completely Cippy...we were discussing it before gun preferences became the topic here..for this I thank you.

Y'all should start a hunting thread of it's own....would probably get a lot of traffic...don't see it as a mass shooting topic though
