Maximum Contracts

I've written on this at another board I post at, but Max contracts are a function of supply and demand, not of measuring a player's worth.

I disagree- to a point. To me, a max contract is a measurement of the value of a player to a certain team. Superstars in their prime are a different story.

If a team won't pay a max contract to, say, Brandon Roy, I'm sure another team will....that's why you give the maximum contract.

Supply and demand are essentially what determine worth, so I don't really see the distinction you're marking.

Yep. Which is why even if Roy isn't extended this summer, one way or another Portland will be paying him the max if they want to keep him.

Supply and demand are essentially what determine worth, so I don't really see the distinction you're marking.

A free market determines the worth of the player, and the worth of the player determines supply and demand for his "market", not the other way around.

Hence, one player (Roy, for example) with 30 teams potentially wanting him. The supply is low, and if the demand is high, he will likely get the maximum contract.

It depends on whether by "worth" we're talking about price (as I assumed) or perceived value

If price, your example is right, your explanation preceding it is wrong, IMO. Right now, Roy's price is low because there's very little demand (articially, as no other team can offer him an extension by CBA rules). "Demand" is 1 team, Portland. If that were going to be the case for Roy's entire career, he'd never get a maximum extension. But since demand is expected to be high once he hits the market (because supply of players like Roy is tiny), his price will steadily rise.

Thus supply and demand drive price

Oh, I was looking at a more macro view of Roy's status. Not a this summer versus next summer comparison. Roy does hold the key that can help drive up or down his value, meaning he can either sign this summer for less (a hypothetical) or wait until next summer to either further increase the demand for him or to diminish it.

I assume he will still be an All-Star level player, so that has to be considered at this point of negotiations anyhow. The Blazers could offer him a Travis Outlaw-like deal if they want as an extension because, as you pointed out, there is no demand for Roy right now because he isn't availabe. However, would that make good business sense by the Blazers? I doubt it, so I'm guessing they are negotiating with next summer's potential situation in mind.
