And why not, they need a catcher too.

And why would he rather play for the yankees at this point? Yanks will have to overpay yet again to get who they want, because event the supposed strength of the farm system can't help yet again. The yankees have no leverage with anyone they approach and are starting to become a team you are worried about playing for if you want to win.

I wouldn't get into a bidding war with Boston on a player if other options exist. Anything would be better than the absolute bullshit they had at catcher last season.
 
Per MLB this am the Rangers are Mc Canns alleged club of interest and I'd agree, stay out of a bidding war.

Stay out of a bidding war unless you have a plan that includes nothing more than driving up the price and you either know you'll be outbid or set the max you're willing to spend and let them beat it.
 
^^^this...and I have no idea how a team can possibly "stay out of a bidding war" when we are talking about top FAs...does anyone really think the Yanx won't be involved in a bidding war if they want to retain Cano?

...the only way there's not a bidding war on any given FA is if there's only ONE bidder.

I meant it in that if there's other options out there like Salty I wouldn't do something stupid in regards to a contract for McCann.

...offensively and defensively, Salty is not the player McCann is....screw the money, the Yanx need talent, and now...and they don't just need a slight improvement over last year's production, they need a huge improvement.
 
The only bidding war I want to win is for the posting on that japanese pitcher as it doesn't affect cap structure. As for cano he gets 6 for 150 and if thats not enough for him tell him to take a hike and put somebody else there. The yanks can find hitting elsewhere at a much better bang for their bucks.
 
...^^^ yes, the posting fee does does apply to the lux tax cap.
 
Go hard after McCann and if you lose out go after Salty but do not lose a bidding war with Boston under no circumstances.
 
....^^^bingo...the difference between the Yanx getting McCann vs the Sox getting McCann would be huge.
 
Every team in the mix can and will pay him the right number, if fans think they should blow him away that's fine, but I doubt they do that, they'll make him a great offer just like every other team, also he doesn't strike me as the type to go to a team that he doesn't want just for a bit more money, the only question is, where does he want to play?

I'll stick with my original prediction on McCann- he's not coming to NY.

Salty had a nice season in 2013, but the two before that looked like the type of player NY should not be signing in the eyes of many fans, all power and nothing else, he's risky.

Salty is risky. He is not a good catcher, and his offense is flawed. He just had a career year in Boston where any player suddenly becomes a great hitter. Buyer beware.
McCann is better but is going to get way too much, and i like you, don't see him coming to the yankees unless they blow him away. Not sure what the yankees do for a catcher. It will probably end up being Salty on a bad deal, or maybe they turn to AJ a year late.

Guess you didn't see my post regarding Granderson doesn't offer any of those reliably...

Only 2 (of 10) years where he hit more than 30 HR (I lowered the bar from 40 and it made no difference),
Only 2 (of 10) years where he had more than 75 RBI (I lowered the bar from 100 and it made no difference),
Only 2 (of 10) years where he had more than 30 doubles (none of which as a Yankee),
A strikeout to walk ratio well over 2:1,
Only 2 years in which he had 25 or more SB (yes, an overrated stat, but how else would you like to gauge his "speed"?),
His fielding isn't impeccable, but not horrible...

So... how would he be an asset or better yet an upgrade? $14.1M/1year is not worth the decent fielding and possibly chance the power comes back...
 
Word is now the Redsox are going hard after Beltran too. After reading about what the other bigger name options might end up commanding, i can see why. Watch the damn sox go and get all the players I want. That would figure.

I wouldn't loose sleep over Beltran... we need to make the post season first... he would be clutch once there, but getting there is the bigger issue IMO

Id rather Beltran on a shorter deal than some crazy 7 year deal for someone like Choo. Hes good, but man, he's not THAT good. Doesnt even hit lefties. Thats a lot of years and money for yet another flawed player.

No the posting fee very much does not. Which is why the yankees can blow out the field on the post to make sure they get him, and then negotiate a deal that doesnt kill their cap room too much.
 
It's my understanding that the posting fee does not count toward the Tax. With that said, I'd be ok with AJ if I knew Sanchez was the real deal. I could then turn the focus on other needs. I don't like Salty for big money, but I would love McCann and I think he could flourish nicely with 81 games a year at Yankee Stadium.

good point... just adding another aging player isn't the best idea
 
...my bad, I left out the "not" in my previous post...it's pretty much common knowledge that posting fees are not applied to payroll...but the money posted still comes out of the same pockets.
