McMillan: "Oden AND Miller will come off the bench"

It doesn't matter who starts. It matters who gets more minutes and who plays with who. If Miller gets 28-32 mpg off the bench and Blake gets 16-20 mpg while starting I think we're fine

Does anyone really think Blake + Rudy should share any minutes in the back court? That back court would be hamstrung with no penetration to set up the outside shooting.

I'd much rather see Miller come off the bench mid to late first quarter and give our second unit the ability to run with LA and Rudy.

Yeah, but that's not really how McMillan's rotation works. It's not like he takes out all his starters and puts in all his subs at one time. He staggers it.

Example:

Starters - Miller/Roy/Batum/Aldridge/Oden

9 minute mark (first quarter) takes out Roy and Batum, subs in Rudy and Outlaw.

*First quarter ends*

Beginning of second quarter subs in Blake, Joel, and Roy. Current lineup of Blake/Roy/Rudy/Outlaw/Joel.

3 minutes in (second quarter) subs out Rudy, Blake and Outlaw, brings in Batum/Adridge/Miller. Miller/Roy/Batum/Aldridge/Joel.

etc etc etc

We have some versatile players, so Nate can mix it up. I'm just not sure where Webster is going to fit into our rotation.

Training camp & pre-season games will determine the rotations.
I really don't get the fretting over who starts the games... what matters much more is who gets the lionshare of the minutes and who finishes games. I'd expect Miller to get 30 minutes or so whether he's starting or not and when Greg isn't foul plagued, I expect he'll do the same... they're clearly the best talents at their positions.

Here is why I "fret" about it.

The goal of every NBA team should be establish the pace you want to play early. Our goal, according to Nate, is to push the ball. Blake simply can't do that, so starting Miller makes a ton more sense. The other goal for a successful NBA team should be punding the ball inside and establishing the post. What Oden does well is draw fouls. That is another big reason both should be starting IMO.

Dude, don't use Logic with Nate. It will make your brain hurt. :sigh:

Nate, prove to me that you're not an idiot. For once in your career as a coach, please. For fuck's sake, don't do it.
Oh, he's an idiot, alright. Totally clueless. Never mind that he's improved the Blazers record every year that he's been in Portland. Never mind that he's universally regarded as a great coach by everybody in the NBA. Never mind that the players all respect him and enjoy playing for him. Never mind any of it. It was all pure luck that got the Blazers to a 54-win season last year. McMilllan had nothing to do with it at all.

What offense does Nate run Shooter? How was our defense last year? I'd say our team won in lieu of Nate not because of him! For a defensive minded coach he has failed. No question!

I GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 main points I see:

-Starters do not mean majority of time (eg Batum and Outlaw this last season)
Who handles the ball at the end of the game? How long does Batum actually play?
-Rotation/squad is dependent on chemistry (Outlaw with the second unit)
I said right away that the second team is going to have trouble creating if Blake plays with them.
-These things are not set in stone (Oden did start, then Joel took over his spot)
There could still be an injury that throws a huge wrench in the works.

I would like to see what pans out with the back up 4. TrOut, Penningham or Cundergraph? Which unit will the young dictionary play with?

Or you could just replace the name "McMillan" with the name "Roy" and it makes a lot more sense why this team is doing so well.

Just because people can only recognize the two most effective NBA sets, doesn't mean that's all we run.

I also find it interesting you want to point out our defense ranked poorly (which is accurate and true), but you didn't ask what our offensive efficiency was.

Our defense is definitely a work in progress - but we still ranked 13th in the NBA during the regular season - which is a big upgrade from where we were 3 years ago...

Great this is turning into another "McMillains Offense is efficient cause of Offensive Rebounds" thread.. I can see it now.

From Blazersedge twitter feed:

B. Roy: "I called Coach [McMillan] + he said Andre and Greg are coming off the bench. I said, 'Coach, you sure about that?' He said, 'Yeah!'

If this is true, shoot me now. Thank God he's only on '1-year deals to prove himself'. It'll be easier to replace him with a real coach when the time comes.

It's only a matter of time before Nate gets replaced IMHO.

McMillan's offense is efficient because of offensive rebounds!!!!

happy?... :devilwink:

Either that, or a complete meltdown. If this team only won 20 games next season, I think Nate would get the axe.

well yeah, but like we said, Nate isnt going anywhere for a while.

LOL I will happily take any bet you want that it's "It's only a matter of time before Nate gets replaced"

ok, if Nate is replaced in the next 2 years you get my Rep, how long would Nate have to stay around to get your rep :D

There was no time table given in the original post though. It was simply "It's only a matter of time before Nate gets replaced"

That is my bet.

McMillan is really insistent on this. It reminds me of a baby with it's baby blanket. You take it away, and all hell breaks loose. There is a really bond between a baby and it's blanket. There is a real bond between McMillan and his current starters.

The dude is passionate about his starting lineup. Don't cross him on it.

dammit! from now on I will say Mediocre Man like one would Newman! My plan was foiled by MM.

MacMillan is so passionate about his starting line-up that he changed it after three games last season (Batum for Outlaw). Don't cross him on it!
