NBA Exec Joins The Etelos Board

Typically, startup technology companies turn to venture capitalists, angel investors or experienced entrepreneurs to sit on their boards. But Etelos -- a cloud computing startup -- pivoted slightly with its latest addition. The Maple Valley company on Thursday named Portland Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard to its board.

It's an unusual move, especially since the 42-year-old has been in the b-ball business most of his adult life. So I asked the Etelos brass why they chose a former NBA point guard, better known for identifying sharp shooters rather than software-as-a-service business models, for the board.

"We've had an opening on the board for several months that we knew we wanted to fill with a high level and well connected business executive," said Etelos CEO Danny Kolke. "We have two great software minds already and Kevin gives us a business-minded executive that understands managing under stress and competition."

Pritchard certainly has been under some stress lately, with rumors that the former University of Kansas star might lose his job as GM of the Paul Allen-owned team. The Oregonian earlier this month called Pritchard the "embattled general manager," with the NBA exec telling the newspaper that: "I can only control what I can control, and right now I'm working on getting ready for the draft."
And apparently joining the Etelos board. Pritchard is in his six year with Portland. Before that, he worked for the San Antonio Spurs and Kansas City Knights.

Founded in 1999, Etelos is a developer of a Web app distribution platform which helps businesses move existing applications to the cloud.

Hard to say how to read that. KP could be looking for new opportunities or the company's execs may think that KP still has connections to Paul Allen that would be beneficial to their interests.

Yeah, I don't think this says anything about Pritchard's standing with the Blazers. Sitting on a board is generally done in addition to one's "regular" job, so it's not like it implies that he sees his employment with the Blazers ending. To me, this just shows that Pritchard remains well-regarded in general.

Geeks wanting to date Blazer dancers.

"Hey Kevin, you're gonna bring your girlfriend to the meeting right? Tell her to bring some friends too!"

True. But Maple Valley doesn't scream "High-Tech powerhouse firm" like, say, South Lake Union or downtown.

The CEO of Boeing sits on something like 8 other boards.

The Boeing CEO job is 50 levels above the Blazers GM job in complexity.

Correct. And he still has time to "sit on the board" of a bunch of other projects. This isn't KP's attempt to get a new day job, is what I'm saying.

My "news" is stranger: Link.

Delonte has been banging Gloria James (Lebron’s Mom) for some time now. Somehow Lebron found out before game four and it destroyed their chemistry and divided the team. I am not making this up, I wish it wasn’t true but it happened.

That makes sense, because his picture looks like Robert Goulet with the moustache, after he played Lancelot. I'm half Canadian myself. I'd like to hear ABM sing Camelot.

It's not every day I tell a man he looks like Robert Goulet. You are the luckiest guy on Earth right now. Tell your wife and let's see what her reaction is.

Crap, I never realized until now how uncomfortable our couch is to sleep on.
