Looks like this duo is here to stay even if it's obvious to everyone but Terry that this combo won't work. Stats filtered with at least 80 min played here.

Worst net rating, worst defense (by FAR), worst passing (by FAR), worst shooting. Enough of a sample size to kill this combo.

The problem can't be addressed by any other player added to this duo.

Here are three man lineups. Even adding Dame has them at a negative number. CJ seems to help a bit bring them to a neutral net rating, but it's still one of the worst trios of all of our lineups. (filtered by >40 mins)

How do you fix this?

You fix it by not being people pleaser and stop playing Melo, but that's not going to happen.

I said this after the DEN preseason game to possibly even start Melo (for 7-8 mins a half) to avoid this duo if you insist that both Melo and Kanter need to play.

@illmatic99 ....thanks for the date, that is brutal! How does The Walnut continue to justify this? And if this is being forced on him by Olshey, WTH?

On the flip side, they were a +13 last night.
But I guess when CJ was a + 33 it doesn't quite look as impressive.

NBA.com just updated the numbers from yesterday. Numbers look a lot better, but trends still remain

Anthony is still part of the 3 lowest duos. Just plain yuck.
He will stay there until Kanter or Gary or someone else misses a game. Anthony didn't play in the Lakers game, and the bench did well that game. So his numbers are always going to look worse in comparison.

Of course, I believe the main reason the bench was better was because Melo wasn't playing, but Gary did go off that game, and it's a 1 game sample.

Honest question, if we're stuck with Melo, is it better to start him?

NOOOOOO! Minimize Melo/Hood/Ant PT as much as possible.

Our first unit it quite good:
Dame, CJ, DJJ, Roco, Nurk

It's a lot harder to make a second unit. Here is what I would do for a 2nd unit, trying to surround Kanter with a much D as the Blazers have.
Kanter, Giles (can he play with Kanter? I dunno), Gary, DJJ/Roco/Little, CJ/Dame.

Melo is washed up and Hood probably is too. It might be that Giles & Little are no good either, but at least they're young and might improve. I'd play Ant here and there because he also has a remote-chance upside. I can't understand playing players that are already bad and on a downward slope instead of rolling the dice and investing in younger players. Dame's clock is ticking.

240 Minutes
Dame 34
CJ 34
Roco 32
DJJ 30
GT 30
Nurk 28
Kanter 20
Giles 20
Little 12

You could also try swapping GT and DJJ between 1st & second units.

Either Stotts' mental faculties need to be questions for playing someone who DOMINATES the negative end of that duo comparisons, or Olshey is forcing Stotts to play such an anchor. If Stotts is doing it, he should be gone. If Olshey is forcing it and Stotts is going along, they should both be gone.

You think Hood is washed up at 28? That is hard for me to believe. I would guess he is just shaking off the rust.

Something else for the stats guys to consider... Does the addition of RoCo's and DJJ's defense offset their offense? Combined, their PER is around 15. Essentially, we're playing 4 on 5 on offense since defenses are sagging off both. Thoughts?

I think sample size and gelling and growing as a team need to be mentioned, not as an excuse, but because with more time together and players getting to know each other - this could change

Right I waiting to see if the 1st unit will hell together and the 2unit too. Last game it was the 2nd got us started by playing together and that lead the 1st doing the same when they came back in. I believe there trust factor by CJ an Dame at times with there team mates on the floor sometimes but see they came out of it a little between the 2nd and 3 quarter.

Could be... we'll see. I mean due to injury not age. He doesn't look good to me at all.

I say we force feed Melo every play of every possession until he cracks the top 10 for all time scoring and then cut him loose. We can take some losses along the way before we need to round ourselves into form. That’s why he’s still playing, right?

Stop crunching numbers and watch the games. Melo has been fantastic for our depth and because he can score so easily and he's one of the best three point shooters in the league, it has taken a lot of pressure off Dame and CJ. And now Dame isn't even playing in the 4th quarter anymore.
