Mens Tennis: Serbia Open

The Serbia Open is an ATP World Tour 250 series men's tennis tournament held in Belgrade, Serbia. It is currently played on outdoor clay courts. The event was held for the first time in 2009, from May 4–10.[1] It is a first for Serbia, as the country never before hosted an Association of Tennis Professionals or a Women's Tennis Association tournament.

The tournament is hosted by top Serbian tennis player Novak Djoković. His family purchased the ATP Tour date from the organizers of the Dutch Open, paid for the plot of land where the venue was built, and convinced the Serbian government to support the event. His uncle Goran is tournament director.

Gasquet drops just one game in Serbia Open first round

Richard Gasquet of France easily beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-0, 6-1 Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Serbia Open.

Another Frenchman, Josselin Ouanna, defeated Flavio Cipolla of Italy 6-3, 6-1.

KARLOVIC, ANDREEV ADVANCE INTO SECOND ROUND OF SERBIA OPEN

Ivo Karlovic of Croatia and Russia's Igor Andreev were straight-sets winners of first-round matches at the Serbia Open on Monday.

The fifth-seeded Karlovic was given a tough match by Serbian wild card Dusan Lajovic but edged through 7-6 (4), 6-4. Karlovic grabbed the key break in the second set in the ninth game and then served out for the match.

Andreev eased past Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic, 6-3, 6-2, while Florent Serra from France defeated Slovakia's Karol Beck, 6-3, 6-3 and Kazakhstan's Evgeny Korolev thrashed Michael Russell of the United States 6-1, 6-0.

Troicki wins first-round match in hometown

Local favorite Viktor Troicki rolled to a straight-set, first-round victory at the Serbia Open tennis tournament in his hometown of Belgrade.

Troicki, seeded sixth, had four aces and didn't drop serve in a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ivan Navarro. Troicki lost only 12 points in eight service games.

GASQUET, SEPPI ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND AT SERBIA OPEN

Richard Gasquet of France and eighth-seeded Andreas Seppi of Italy advanced Tuesday to the second round of the Serbia Open.

Gasquet routed Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-0, 6-1, while Seppi rallied to beat Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Troicki rides rout to Belgrade quarters

Sixth-seeded Viktor Troicki lost only one game in picking up a second-round victory Wednesday at the $556,000 Serbia Open tennis tournament

Troicki pasted Florent Serra 6-0, 6-1 in 41 minutes. Troicki lost five points -- one in the second set -- on serve in the rout. He finished with 75 percent of the total points, allowing Serra just 17 points in the match.

Wawrinka cruises into quarterfinals in Belgrade

Fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka continued his impressive form on European clay with a comfortable win over Italian qualifier to reach the quarterfinals of the 2010 Serbia Open, an ATP World Tour 250 event being played in Belgrade, Serbia.

Wawrinka, who had an impressive run in Rome last week, wrapped up the opening set at the loss of just one game. The second set saw some resistance from the Italian, but an elusive break got Wawrinka the match with a 6-1, 6-4 scoreline in just 76 minutes of play.

Djokovic pulls out in Belgrade

World number two Novak Djokovic was forced to retire from the Serbia Open during his quarter-final with fellow Serb Filip Krajinovic in Belgrade.

The defending champion and top seed pulled out at the start of the second set after losing the first 6-4 and he was visibly struggling.

The 18-year-old wild card Krajinovic will now meet American Sam Querrey who held on to beat Igor Andreev.

Third seed Querrey reached his fourth semi-final of the season after battling past the Russian 6-3 2-6 6-4.

Isner and Wawrinka advance to semifinals of the Serbia Open

Second-seeded John Isner of the United States rallied to beat Richard Gasquet of France 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 and reach the semifinals of the Serbia Open on Friday.

John Isner edged Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 7-5, 7-5 Saturday to reach the final of the Serbia Open final.

American Querrey wins title

Sam Querrey survived a match point as he rallied to beat John Isner 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 Sunday to win an all-American Serbia Open final in Belgrade.

The second-seeded Isner wasted a match point in the second set while serving and leading 5-3 as Querrey converted a break point with a forehand passing shot. The third-seeded Querrey then converted his fifth break point in the ninth game of the third set before serving out the match for his fourth career ATP tour title, and first on clay.
