Not necessary, sure, but the benefit to the quote is that it provides an alert to the poster you are quoting. It allows for greater immediacy in response.

It's funny how much better the French team looked against the US without Parker than it did with him against Spain. Maybe they'll survive with his retirement. They could start De Colo and Fournier at guard and give Batum the point forward job of his dreams!

I think De Colo is now on a higher level than Parker and their play is not very compatible so I think Parker's retirement will clear the path for him and the whole team will work better. The fact they played better without Parker is not a coincidence in my opinion.

Well I do get an alert for a new post on a thread i have replied (watching) so I thought it applies to everyone. Probably you switched it off.
