Merged: B-Roy Shot.......

I'm super pissed at people making fun of Brandon Roy Valiant effort. Most people would run away in that situation not put themselves in front of the bullets...
I don't think that's true.

I don't think that's true.

We don't know. That's why is always best to form your opinion after all the information. If you deserve the jokes after you have the information that's a different story.

Seriously, once filthy rich, why would anyone ever go to Compton willingly?

I call on a few clients in Compton. There are actually some nice neighborhoods there. Granted some not so nice ones, but none the less it's not as bad as you might think.

It's bush league.
I'm sorry you feel that way, but of course it's not the only opinion with validity. If I knew him personally, I'd be making the same jokes. My brother was shot in the leg and the back as an innocent bystander in a gang-related drive-by situation; I joke about it with him too. I can understand why you wouldn't, but that doesn't mean that those of us who do have "issues".

So it sounds like two other people were shot as well. I wonder what condition they are in. I'm glad to hear that BRoy is okay.

Glad there was no fatalities. Who TF shoots at children though?! That is messed up.

Can't wait for Canzano's article blaming Olshey for this. "Roy was never shot when KP was GM."

Right or comparing the Blazers playoff failures to it. "It was the second weekend in a row the Blazers have been shot, first they were gunned down in the first round during a Warriors driveby, then Brandon Roy took one to the leg. At least Roy was protecting children."

Jokes just don't seem appropriate here. Maybe in time. Truth is, if BRoy didn't take that bullet one of the kids behind him would have - the outcome would be grim. No word on whether the kids he was protecting were family, but regardless, it took some stones to do what he did. He's a hero in my book.

You know him personally. Those people don't.

Honestly when I first saw an article about Brandon Roy being shot, I thought the cops had got him.

I am glad he's ok. He's a hero for saving those kids. I wish him well.

  • No children.
  • Not at grandmas.

I'm not sure the part you bolded meant the unintended victims. There can be more people involved in committing the crime than just the shooter especially if it is, as suggested, gang-related. Plus, the intended victims, if they were also gang members. If children were unintentionally fired on, I doubt police would be looking to question them as "involved."

I'm not saying Roy did or didn't shield children, I just don't think that line contradicts it.

Brandon stepped up when it counted...no children were hurt...mad respect jokes and all....at least they didn't shoot his knees..BRoy with great defense and a game winning blocked shot!!

We don't know. That's why is always best to form your opinion after all the information. If you deserve the jokes after you have the information that's a different story.
No. I mean I think most people would shield children on instinct alone.

For the record, when some of my friends joked about Reagan being shot I did not laugh and I loathed Reagan since his governor days. Before.

I think we can use gallows humor because no one apparently was seriously hurt.

Shooter was adult black male, well, great fucking description. Maybe it was Ben Carson? I mean, he does fit.

I don't really think it's really gallow's humor. My understanding of the term is that it's humor people use to handle difficult, tense or painful circumstances. I don't think anyone making these jokes (here or on Twitter) are really experiencing a great deal of tension that they're defusing. It's just grist for the mill in trying to crank out more one-liners.

It's not terribly harmful in a situation where no one's life was lost or ruined, but I can certainly understand why people find it problematic. The general attitude these days (and I say "these days" because I think this is, if not unique to, certainly massively exacerbated by, social media) is to try to turn everything into the most quotable joke possible, whether appropriate or not. I think trying to pass it off as "defusing" or "how we handle painful situations" is trying to add a layer of nobility where it doesn't exist.

And no, I don't think it's at all comparable to joking about a similar situation involving a family member or close friend. With a family member or close friend, there is tension/grief/pain to be defused. You care about the friend or family member and they know it. None of the above really applies here.

I'm not lecturing--I don't consider my role (or area of interest) to be showing others a "better way." I'm just adding my own opinion to an interesting meta topic that arose in the midst of all of this. If I cared about lecturing people on things I, personally, don't like, I'd spend my entire time on this forum doing that. ;)

9:13 AM PT -- TMZ Sports spoke with a witness who says the victims were shot in the knee, butt and arm.

Another witness says Roy was the person who was shot in the leg.

We're told the suspects ran to a getaway car following the shooting and drove off. The witness does not remember what kind of car it was.

This is what makes me skeptical of the story being put out there. If the person had said I didn't see the getaway car that would make sense. I don't remember? Really? This happened Saturday night. This story sounds like the BS that gets spewed after a gang shooting. No one knows why they were shot at. They're totally innocent. No one remembers anything. Uh huh.

That only thing that is different this time is that Roy's agent was able to plant a story with USA Today proclaiming Roy is a hero.

I love and respect the hell out of Roy but this incident sets my BS meter off.

Former NBA All-Star Brandon Roy was one of four people wounded in a Compton shooting Saturday evening, authorities said.

Two men walked up to Roy and a group of people he was with in the 2000 block of North Nestor Avenue around 9 p.m. Saturday, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Rick Mejia. The men then opened fire for “no apparent reason,” Mejia said.

Roy and the other three wounded all were released from area hospitals over the weekend, Mejia said. All of the victims were men, and they were in Compton with Roy for “some type of gathering,” he said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear and no arrests have been made, according to Mejia.

The men did not say anything before opening fire.

Now USA Today is backing away from the original story. Just updated 20 mins ago:

USA TODAY Sports reported that Roy was shot in the leg near his grandmother's house, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

The person requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Roy was shielding some of the young people who were there, the person said.

  • Now it's near his grandmother's house, not at it.
  • Now it's young people, not his kids.
  • Sam Amick's name has been removed from the story.

You have a BS meter? Must not work very well given how much of it gets slung around in this forum. Either that, or maybe you enjoy it?

Personally, I have no BS meter. Donald Trump is awesome.

Man that is fucked up and he did while protecting some kids. I always loved B Roy. Man is a friggin hero! The only Husky I ever loved.
Hey.... that sounds like a dime store novel!
