Really? I thought he was on a 10-day. Do they get extended automatically if the player is hurt? That seems like a good deal for the player, if so.

He's on a non-guaranteed contract, but for a full season. Memphis will need to decide if they want to keep him prior to the upcoming deadline where the contract automatically rolls over into guaranteed.

I'm pretty sure they could release him prior to the rollover, but bring him back for two 10-day shots, then decide for the season.

I actually thought the team has to pay Darius for an injury, but only after the contract rolls over into guaranteed. Don't quote me on that though, I haven't checked to confirm.

You would be wrong...If he plays his 10 games it goes back on the books because obviously the injury wasnt career ending which was POR argument to get him off the books.

I thought I recalled some language about "good faith" or something. Obviously, "good faith" isn't a measureable, but if Miles gets 1-2 minutes per game, it seems like Stern could rule that not in good faith (i.e. the player wasn't signed and played because the doctors were wrong, but just to hurt another team). Plenty of things come down to judgment calls.

Of course, I may be suffering from a false memory. I simply vaguely recall that being mentioned sometime over the past year.

Heres something I found:

(h) Long-Term Injuries. Any player who suffers a career-ending injury or illness, and whose contract is terminated by the Team in accordance with the NBA waiver procedure, will be excluded from his Team’s Team Salary as follows:

(1) Beginning on the first anniversary of the injury or illness, the Team may apply to the NBA to have the player’s Salary for each remaining Salary Cap Year covered by the Contract excluded from Team Salary.

(2) The determination of whether a player has suffered a career-ending injury or illness shall be made by a physician selected jointly by the NBA and the Players Association.

(3) Notwithstanding Section 4(h)(1) and (2) above, the career-ending injury or illness of a player who plays in more than ten (10) games in any Season shall not be deemed to have occurred prior to the last game in which the player played in such Season.

(4) Notwithstanding Section 4(h)(1) and (2) above, if after a player’s Salary is excluded from Team Salary in accordance with this Section 4(h), the player plays in ten (10) NBA games in any Season, the excluded Salary for the Salary Cap Year covering such Season and each subsequent Salary Cap Year shall thereupon be included in Team Salary (and if the tenth game played is a playoff game, then the excluded Salary shall be included in Salary retroactively as of the start of the Team’s last Regular Season game). After a player’s Salary for one (1) or more Salary Cap Years has been included in Team Salary in accordance with this Section 4(h)(4), the player’s Team shall be permitted at the appropriate time to re-apply to have the player’s Salary (for each Salary Cap Year remaining at the time of the re-application) excluded from Team Salary in accordance with the rules set forth in this Section 4(h).

(5) If a Team applies to have a player’s Salary excluded from its Team Salary pursuant to this Section 4(h), the player shall cooperate in the processing of the application, including by appearing at the reasonably scheduled place and time for examination by the jointly-selected physician.

(6) Only the Team with which the player was under Contract at the time his career-ending injury or illness became known or reasonably should have become known shall be permitted to apply to have the player’s Salary excluded from Team Salary pursuant to this Section 4(h).

Problem is Memphis isn't going to the playoffs, so they can probably make it look like they want him by playing him a bit more closer to the end of the season if he lasts that long.

Well, we have to pay him no matter what. It's just a question of whether the money we pay him counts against the salary cap or not. It counts against Paul's wallet for sure.

Well Chris Wallace did trade Joe Johnson for Tony Delk and Rodney Rogers.. and traded for Vin Baker when he was sliding quickly. And traded Pau for nothing, so obviously the guy knows what he's doing.

Here's the more interesting question for me...

Since we're all pretty sure Heisley and Wallace aren't smart enough to come up with this on their own, do you think someone's giving them stuff in the back room/under the table, or someone planted the idea (Miles' agent?) and they're doing it for free?

i don't see why it matters. what would we have been using the cap space in summer 2009 for anyway? giving a huge contract to marion?

our best opportunities for a major upgrade would have always been via trade or sign/trade anyway. not a big deal.

Cap space can also be used in trades. If Pritchard doesn't find a good deal by the trade deadline, the Blazers can let LaFrentz expire and, by virtue of being under the cap, engineer a salary-unbalanced trade, where they take back much more salary then they send.

Miles would cut into the trade flexibility. It may not matter, but it could.
