Davis to Undergo Shoulder Surgery
Portland center to miss the remainder of the season
Posted: Mar 01, 2017
Portland center Ed Davis will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder to repair an injured labrum, it was announced today by Neil Olshey, Trail Blazers president of basketball operations.
The procedure is scheduled to be performed next Tuesday by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
A specific prognosis will be determined for Davis following the procedure, but he is expected to be out for the remainder of the 2016-2017 season.
Davis originally injured the shoulder during the 2015-16 season and has progressively worsened.
Davis is averaging 4.3 points (52.8% FG), 5.3 rebounds and 17.2 minutes in 46 games (12 starts) this season.

Since Sly wouldn't do it, I got you, buddy.
No need to thank me.
Boooooooooo! He was getting desperate enough to pay to have it merged.
Oh, yes. That's the elephant in the room.Given our history with centers, this seems an unnecessary tweaking of the nose of hubris.
injured the previous season and got progressively worse ...not only that but we started last season with Chief at the 4 and Vonleh...playing Mason and Ed wasn't going to happen much early...Stotts was scrambling to find a center on that early roster full of power forwards...and Meyers. I have no reason to believe Ed was intentionally lazy...from everything Stotts said, Ed is a great, unselfish teammate who plays the right way and I agree....you could tell he wasn't healthy when he got spot minutes, after Nurk, there wasn't much reason to risk further damage....Chief and Meyers were also hobbled....Noah stepped up big time at that point. The first sign that he was even favoring the shoulder didn't show up until late January of 2017.
I've always wanted a big man coach...Bill Laimbeer is my first choiceSo for having a big man coach.
The four most important big men on our roster, and the key to our future success, are currently all under the age of 23, yet we don't find it necessary to hire a real big man coach.

mention Ed makes 7 million this season and 6 million next season....those contracts aren't easy to replace
Actually, the year before last Ed was my favorite player. He brought consistent effort and energy every night. I appreciated and respected that.
Last year, to me, he was the biggest disappointment on the team. The effort just wasn't there and his body language was horrible. It was like he no longer wanted to be here. Other role players (Crabbe and Turner) got HUGE contracts and he missed out. Not sure if he resented that, or not, but the effort just wasn't there, for whatever reason.
There was no mention of any injury until much later in the season.

It may not have been mentioned widely in the press, but, according to NBA.com, Davis originally injured the shoulder during the 2015-16 season and it progressively worsened until he had to have the surgery.

I've read that multiple times, but as I said, the original injury wasn't significant enough that Davis even remembered when or how it happened, it did not impact his play for the remainder of the 2015-16 season, or the playoffs and was not serious enough for him to consider off season surgery last summer. He re-injured it January 20 against PHI. Prior to that, there was no mention of Davis playing through pain, or any evidence of him favoring the shoulder. The word progressive is a but misleading. It's not like it just gradually got worse. There was a significant inflection point on January 20 that led to his season ending surgery.

You know there ain't nothing wrong.....Bump and merge.

I agree that there was a point where it got significantly worse in January. I guess I think that these guys play with pain so often that it's hard to know how much their performance is impacted by it. Regardless, I'm certainly hoping that he shows up to fall camp healthy and hungry for a new contract...wherever that may be given.
I hope Ed comes back strong in a contract year, because, if he does, it means less Meyers, and/or greater trade value.
Even if Ed returns to 2015-16 form, I think his days in POR are numbered. I think Swanigan gives us everything Ed does and more (like passing and 3-point shooting), with a much higher ceiling, and as the trade deadline approaches, I think Ed's expiring contract will be our most valuable trading chip.

he was in Denver for mcdyess and lafrentz as coach and head of player personelHow has Meyers Leonard done since Kim Hughes was fired? After two full years under Jim Moran, does Noah Vonleh have a single reliable offensive move?
I'm not claiming Meyers was destined for stardom, but under Hughes he, at least appeared to be becoming a solid NBA role player.
Meyers last season under Kim Hughes vs. Meyers after two years under Jim Moran:
2014-15 PER = 14.8
2016-17 PER = 8.9
2014-15 TS% = .631
2016-17 TS% = .507
2014-15 TRB% = 15.8
2016-17 TRB% = 10.8
2014-15 WS/48 = .158
2016-17 WS/48 = .053
2014-15 ORtg = 117
2016-17 ORtg = 102
2014-15 DRtg = 105
2016-17 DRtg = 112
Kim Hughes was not "some hall of fame big", but he was a proven big man coach. Joel Freeland, Chris Kaman, DeAndre Jordan and LaMarcus Aldridge showed significant improvement under Kim Hughes - and Meyers was, too.
So, you tell me, what exactly has Jim Moran done to show he can help NBA big men improve their games? Name one NBA big man Jim Moran has "coached up". Jim Moran may be a good NBA assistant coach, but he has done nothing to show he's a good NBA big man coach.
