The Mets with the lead and the Nats losing means the Mets might take sole possession of the NL East. It has been a long time since both the Yankees and Mets have held first place in August.
 
That may happen tonight, D-Backs up on Washington, Mets up on Miami, bot teams shutting out opponents. Washington, always the pick of the experts now flubbing the dub, in the case of Miami looks like Loria lied to the fans again. Signed Stanton, got all those other pieces, now only Stanton and Fernandez are still on board.
 
It is good to see both teams in first place. NY competition
will definitely or should light a fire under Cashman's stagnate*
arse.

* Take it any way you like.
 
There is nothing better than a Subway Series, IMO........as far as MLB goes anyway........not even an L.A. W.S. could compare, but I doubt we will ever see a Fwy Series.......

As far as National Ratings go, I'd venture to say, the Subway Series, may outdraw a South vs North Side of Chicago Series. Either way, the Chi-town Series won't ever happen, IMO. If it did, I still would wager, a Subway Series, would draw more viewers Internationally and Nationally too..........and nope, I don't mean Subway 5$ footlongs.......!!!
 
Hey..... Don't pass the keys to the kingdom to the Mets too soon. They have a late season tradition you know.
 
I like there new additions but for them to make the PS the'll have to win the division.
 
I didn't realize they were that close to the WC.
 
If I were Steinbrenner I'd be asking Mr. Cashman why the Mets have all those young stud pitchers and the Yankees are running out nags like CC every 5th day. Just plain weird that the New York Yankees with all that money and prestige have a farm system that seems to be located in a perpetual dust bowl.
 
It's gonna' be one helluva September or should be. I can't foresee the Nats taking a back seat for long. Yet, these are almost the same Nats, that were picked in ST to go to the W.Series, so faltering is in their blood...!

Harvey was the 7th pick, 1st round 2010 draft.
In that draft Harper went #1 to Nats,
Baltimore picked Machado #3 (passed on Harvey).

Also in 2010 draft-
Syndergaard, 1st round #38 by Toronto, and deGrom 9th #272.
Syndergaard was part of a very good deal along with d'arnuad by Alderson as the Mets sent R.A. Dickey to Toronto.
Jacob deGrom turned into a spectacular (fortunate) success story.
The 272nd player chosen- in 2013 between A-AA-AAA he had a 4.51 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.
In 2014 at AAA he had a 2.58 and 1.27 WHIP then the Mets called him up in May 2014 and he has become one of the absolute best young pitchers in MLB.

Yanks picked Cito Culver (#32) of that draft.....

Mets were, have been able to get guys like Harvey as the 7th overall pick because of their "bad" W-L records the past few years.
There were 6 other teams who passed on him and quite a few who passed on Syndergaard before Toronto picked him.

The Yanks' OBVIOUS problem have been their inability to draft and DEVELOP good young SP.
They also - imo - somehow MUST acquire OR draft and develop a GOOD top flight young LH SP.....championship caliber Yankee teams "always" have at least ONE GOOD lefty in the rotation.
 
Yeah in fairness if you would like to miss the playoffs 13 out of the 14 years then perhaps you can do what the Mets have done. As for the Dickey trade the Mets certainly made out there as in hindsight Toronto made a terrible deal.

We've already had this discussion on the 2010 Draft, Culver, et al.

Personally I'd of rather picked C. Sale over M. Harvey. (Harvey's arm was suspect at that time, and we know the rest of the success story after TJ surgery).......


The real kicker is: Andrelton Simmons, taken as the #70th Draft Pick, all Teams were asleep at the wheel, when it came to Simmons....

as well- "Compensatory Draft Picks" Mike Trout given to the Angels for Tex,.......

I know blow the Harvey Horn all you want,

Yep, of course. That's the price teams like tbe Yanks have to pay for finishing with excellent W-L records the past 10 yrs or so and signing big free agents...
Mets are/were similar to the Rays' situation as they started to become "good' under Madden....they too were getting their share of early draft picks as a resilt of them losing for so long- Longoria was the 3rd pick 2006 draft.

The Dickey trade was outstanding as the Mets maximized their asset...they weren't going to re-sign him, but he was coming off a Cy Young season and Toronto needed immediate pitching help.

I naturally included Culver only to help complete the reply with added info in the event '5545 wasn't aware of that terrible Yankee pick in that same draft.

The topic of run differential was brought up and you mentioned the fabulous 1927 Yankee run differential along with the '61 and '98 Yanks (post 38) and was curious if any other teams can measure up to those Yankee teams.

I found the 1939 Yankees (post 47) and they had a PLUS 411 run differential, better than the '27 Yanks.
Mind boggling. Did you see it?
