Donald Trump indicated to Mike Pence late Wednesday night on the phone that he is moving toward choosing the Indiana governor as his vice presidential nominee, a source familiar with the process tells CNN.

Pence's team has gotten word to start preparing to get the official nod Thursday, and the Trump campaign is currently planning for the official nod Thursday, according to two sources familiar with the process.

The timing of a decision is important. Pence is running for re-election as governor and he faces a deadline of noon on Friday to withdraw his candidacy for that office. Indiana law prohibits him from running for both a state and federal office.

The Pence campaign has all the paperwork prepared and ready to file in order to meet the deadline in case he is tapped by Trump.

But until an offer is made and accepted, nothing is certain in this very fluid situation. Earlier on Thursday, a Trump adviser cautioned Trump's leaning could change.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, also under consideration, had no comment when asked about the latest developments.

Pence has been a front-runner for a while. Most people think it'll be Pence or Gingrich, with Mike Flynn (the general) or Chris Christie as possible wildcards.

Christie, though, is supposedly angling more for an attorney general position in a Trump administration, rather than a vice presidential post.

We should order him a congratulations cake from Denny's Muslim bakery.

Though, to be fair, pretty much any mainstream Republican would face the same dilemma. Republicans have had to spend a year blinking incredulously at the crazy things Trump has said--now one of them gets to pretend that Trump was sane all along.

Unless Trump zogs when people expect him to either zig or zag and selects Sarah Palin. That would be the best thing ever. Palin wouldn't have to worry about any embarrassing recanting.

What a lame choice if he had balls hed choose this guy........

Clint says he's unavailable, but here he is looking at his own nominee:

I'm still hoping for Ivanka, myself, but Sarah would be acceptable. And it could happen - she's not on the speaker list because Alaska is 'too far away'. Could be an unsubtle cover story.

And we've been paying for the policies of the Clinton administration ever since.

T-minus a couple of days before I start seeing the T.P jokes.

I try to imagine Trump running and for the likes of me...I just can't picture it...Pence can probably run a 5 minute mile
