Rutgers AD Tim Pernetti resigns

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Tim Pernetti announced his resignation as Rutgers' athletic director on Friday and in a letter to the university said that he wished he had overridden school officials and fired basketball coach Mike Rice.

Pernetti's resignation comes three days after video came to light showing Rice shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players and using gay slurs during practice.

"My continued tenure as Athletic Director is no longer sustainable for the University which I attended and where a piece of me will always remain," Pernetti said in his resignation letter. "In connection with the incidents involving former basketball Coach Mike Rice, as was the case with all other matters which I handled on behalf of the University, I always tried my best to do what is right."

Well, the players for one. Their parents. The alumni of the university who now get to watch their alma mater being embarrassed on ESPN. The taxpayers of the state of New Jersey who are helping to pay his salary.

Seeing as how these players earned scholarships to attend Rutgers, one assumes most had opportunities to play at other colleges - and you can be damn sure high school kids watching this and being recruited by Rutgers are going to think it is a big deal.

LOL.

And I think anyone that condones these actions needs to reexamine their priorities. The people that need to bully in these cases are usually only doing so in order to deal with their own flaws and only serves to make themselves feel better about being a loser.

LOL.

I don't care what Blow's take is.

Rice's players came to his defense. They didn't come out saying stuff like "thank goodness, it really sucked having him as coach."

Blow? Rice's players? I'll go with the players. They're actually informed in the subject at hand.

And note, I don't condone Rice's actions. I think the reaction is way overblown.

It's kind of like an abused wife coming to the defense of their husband.

No it isn't.

It's like a basketball player coming to the defense of his former coach.

In the case of the abused wife, there are a lot of considerations as to why she might defend the guy. In the case of the athlete, he can choose to say nothing or bad mouth the coach - nothing to lose.

Darius Miles is irrelevant. He was never beaten by a college coach. FACT.

He went from HS-to-pros.

Sorry, dude, but you're so wrong it's embarrassing. He played for Coolidge College.

Learn the game, then post.

You don't think the players were afraid to say anything because they could possibly lose their scholarship?

That surely seems like the case. Instead they just transferred.

I've played for all kinds of coaches. My HS coach was a Phil Jackson-type. Soft-spoken and not a yeller. My college coach made Bobby Knight look like Stuart Smiley. When he yelled at you, he'd grab your facemask and call you every name in the book. It was just his way. Once you grew accustomed to it (as I'm sure the Rutgers players were), it wasn't a big deal.

It's not HS, it's college. Who cares what you're called? Sticks and stones. I never served, but I can't imagine drill instructors during basic training being touchy-feely. Like I said before, grow a pair.

Robert Lumpkins, who transferred to Rutgers from New Mexico State, said Rice was a passionate coach but he didn't have a problem with his coaching style. Lumpkins said he was surprised to hear Rice was suspended last December. He also said he never heard Rice use the word "f----t" during practices.

He must not have been at practice then.

Wally Judge, a junior current Rutgers player, had transferred from Kansas State, where he said the practices were harder. He said he didn't think Rice's language was inappropriate, and the coach never put his hands on him.

I wonder how he would feel if the coach did fire a basketball at his head and shove/kick him.

Mike Coburn, whose last season at Rutgers was Rice's first in 2010-11, said he had no issues with the coach's treatment of players, and because he was a team captain, he took the brunt of it. He said Rice was challenging them to excel and, though he acknowledged how Rice's coaching style may look to outsiders, he said players understood it.

Obviously not, dipshit.

Malick Kone, a player who just announced he is transferring from Rutgers, said he found the practices to be too intense and he didn't like the language Rice used. Malick, who was born in Guinea, said Rice would make fun of how he spoke English and would mock him after Malick would ask for things to be explained. He said Rice threw basketballs at people and could have hurt a player, though he was never hurt. Sophomore Jerome Seagears and junior college transfer Vincent Garrett are also transferring, according to the Newark Star-Ledger report.

Why would they lose their scholarship? Rice was already fired.

They're coming out in his defense SINCE he was fired.

A handful of players don't speak for every player.

Fact is I'd bet money that players were afraid to say anything because they would fear losing their scholarship, thus they're stuck in a situation they truly hate with a man/coach they despise.

Similar to an abusive relationship.

Fact is they came out since he was fired and defended him.

Your analogy is not relevant to this situation.

And there may well be players who play for coach K who want a more military-like environment, too.

Or they knew how to handle his tirades.

It's very relevant.

No doubt there were players who felt like they were stuck in the situation and feared losing their scholarship, thus they stayed and took the abuse.

The Coach K part made me laugh. Get out of here with that.

Coach K went to West Point to train to be an officer in the army. I'm sure he knows a thing or two about a military-like environment.

I doubt he thinks what Mike Rice Jr did is acceptable in college basketball.

Fact is 5 others players have transferred in the last year, and the team isn't very good this year, or any year.

Are the players who left defending him?

Technically yes, but this is what he said

Easy to say if you're not the one having a basketball fired at your head, isn't it?

On a different note, Jay Mohr made a good point today about the AD's resignation. Check out this sentence from Robert Barchi's statement today:

Robert Barchi said:
I regret that I did not ask to see the video when Tim first told me of its existence, because I am certain this situation would have had a different outcome had I done so.

So the University President is informed that the head basketball coach is on tape shoving, insulting, throwing balls at, and generally abusing his players, and he makes no effort to actually watch the tape, in order to actually discern the level of the offense. Then, when the whole thing blows up 4 months later, the coach (who went to anger management) gets fired, the AD (who actually levied a suspension and a fine) is forced out, but the President (who took no corrective action) keeps his job.

I guess ignorance really is bliss.

Judge transferred TO Rutgers, it says. PapaG was saying did anyone who left Rutgers defend him.

Hey bud, you never replied to me in the Grizz game thread when you cracked on me about a post and sarcastically said I should do work with the NBA........remember. Then I informed you that on my last trip to Atlanta, I actually went in and did some work with them ironically. And actually this summer, I might be doing some work on a show with those guys. Kinda' interesting because see, you were trying to crack on me always saying I bring nothing to the forum and don't know shit about hoops, where as I am most likely going to make a ton of cash this summer doing just that....... giving my opinion about the game. Just checking if you had heard about this...... because I quoted and replied to you about it about 4 times and nothing.....crickets. Anyway, let me know what you think about me being paid by the league BECAUSE of my vast amount of knowledge of the game.

I "cracked" on you for stating the obvious that Memphis is in playoff mode right now. No shit they are.

Get over yourself and stop derailing this thread with your agenda against me. Take your shit to a different thread or something.
