Mike Rice Jr. going viral

Is he an asshole? For sure. Is it unacceptable behavior? Throwing balls out of anger certainly qualifies. But abuse? Not even close.

Maybe closer than you think. I could see it putting players in a very difficult emotional situation. The "if you don't like it, quit" concept might not be an option.

I could see players feeling trapped because they really want to play and not lose their spot on the team, but hating what they consider to be irrational and unnecessary behavior from the coach.

If any of his players are actually gay, it's definitely abuse. Calling someone a ***got is no different than calling someone a ****** or a spick. That's hardly appropriate for someone that works for the state. I realize why some of you think this isn't that big of a deal, and if this was an argument about a drill instructor verbally abusing his recruits I would be right there with ya, but we aren't talking about preparing someone for combat, we're talking about a basketball game. If this was the pros, you might have an argument, but these kids rely on this asshole because of their scholarships. They can't quit (unless another team would have them), they can't leave, and they can't tell him to fuck off or he would kick them off the team. He holds all the cards. He is in complete control. That's how college sports are.

Or if they quit, the (illegal, under NCAA rules) under-the-table handouts the athletes and/or their families receive will disappear.

Honestly, I think I could even see him getting away with it if it was a couple times, in very SPECIFIC circumstances, where he just lost his cool and players were being out of line so he got their attention in such a manner that would demand respect.

But from what I can tell - and the evidence brought forward - it happened on multiple occasions, becoming a habit more than a "last" measure.

Still, I don't see how making a mistake warrants having a ball launched at you and being chewed out to the nth degree, unless you are verbally harassing teammates/coaches or being disrespectful physically, starting scrums. I saw none of that.

Rutgers is the same institution that went after Don Imus for saying "nappy headed hoes".

The fact Rice didn't get fired on the spot for his homophobic slurs is a joke. Rutgers looks terrible here. The AD needs to be fired as well.

Good point. That was pretty ridiculous at the time (stupid thing to say but an even dumber thing to make a big deal out of).

Not wanting to do something doesn't equal not being able to do something. You guys keep saying the player "can't" do anything.

Bull. Fucking. Shit.

And obviously he should be fired for this, ***got is a no-no word, and throwing balls at players' heads is just odd.

So it's no big deal, common practice, but he should be fired?

Well, if he was losing....probably. but if he is winning, they'll look the other way.

I think he should be fired. Nate raises some good points. What if the player was gay? What if the player was effeminate? What if the player is a decent human being and offended by this language? He comes across as an animal. This is worse than the Bobby Knight videos if you ask me. If it is not worse, it is pretty close. The AD is deplorable too. This kind of conduct is not acceptable.

OMG SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING TO OFFEND SOMEONE ELSE ITS ABUSE.

So soft.

What if a player was an eskimo and Mike Rice was eating a klondike bar?

Opinions from some players:

LeBron James ‏@KingJames

If my son played for Rutgers or a coach like that he would have some real explaining to do and I'm still gone whoop on him afterwards! C'mon

JALEN ROSE ‏@JalenRose

The video of Rutgers HC Rice ABUSING players is APPALLING! He should be FIRED ASAP. I'm embarrassed for College Basketball. #NCAA

Jared Sullinger ‏@Jared_Sully0

I would of snapped on the coach from Rutgers.... I would sit before I take some abuse from that man

Jared Dudley ‏@JaredDudley619

Well obviously, there a very few things that absolutely 'can't be done'. The point is: if I were a college basketball that worked my ass off to get to the Rutgers program, I wouldn't let a misbehaving coach push me out of it. Thus the rock and the hard place.

I'm waiting for people to say Mike Rice Sr. should be fired because that's his son. Anyone?

Thus you maketh the viral video to oust his sorry ass! :biglaugh:

He should be fired, not for being tough, but for being violent, and for using derogatory language. A coach, teacher, priest, principal, scout leader, or anyone leading children needs to know that they need to find another way to communicate ones message, other than via violence or bigotry. Simple.

I don't think this means that Mike Rice Jr. is the devil, or a bad person, but he is someone who behaved in a way not fitting a leader of youth. If it was one instance, then perhaps a warning or temp suspension would be sufficient, but given the repeated nature of the offenses, he should be fired.
