Do you need a reason to fire someone? Coaches get fired all the time.

If the school needs a reason they can say they tried the fine and anger management, it didn't work so they are firing him. Also, this video is going to make recruiting hard, seems like another valid reason to fire someone . . . if you need a reason.

Not sure what I "supposedly know full well" about Rasheed and a girlfriend - in fact I don't know anything full well.

Not the subject.

Everyone knows why they're firing them. Any excuse they give is bullshit. Plain and simple. They're firing him to cover their own ass and nothing else.

Yes, that's why people sue their employers for firing them without cause.

A "for cause" firing would negate severance if it held up. They can fire him for any reason that isn't illegal (i.e. discriminatory, retaliation for whistle blowing, etc.). If it is not a for cause firing though, they probably owe him his salary per his contract.

he was already suspended, and I'm sure the university was aware of these tapes beforehand, not that they would be released.

if they fire him now, he should have a good cause of action for breach of contract, at minimum, they'll pay him to go away at full value of his current contract.
The AD has already said they saw the tapes and knew they would be released at some point.

so was it the "director of player personnel" who released it? He seemed kind of butthurt on the interview. my feeling is that he probably released them because Rice probably went postal on him some time in practice.

Actually you don't need a cause if you are an employee at will, which most are.

If there is a contract or you are union, then it is different.

So a basketball coach at the university level, public employee is an "at-will hire"? ok.

Actually Murdock reported Rice to the AD. Murdock was let go. He has an active whistleblower lawsuit against Rutgers pending and released copies he kept of Rice's practices to OTL.

My guess is that he still gets paid.

That is my guess as well. Like any other coaches situation, get fired, school still pays contract. I don't think unversity uses tape to try and get out from the contract, I just think they fire him and pay off rest of contract, whatever that is. I don't think they give him the 50K back . . . but who knows.

I'm sure he won't get the money back, and he won't ask for it because he's in damage control mode. If he ever wants to coach again he has to handle this perfectly. If he starts crying about money and mistreatment he'll get fucking owned by the media.

...how about this, what if the fans could chuck mini basketballs at the coach(es) for making bonehead substitutions or failing to adjust?! :devilwink:

Was that your lame ass attempt at humor? That my good friend should be proud of this horrible situation his son has put himself in?
If Rice wasn't your good friend, you'd be all over this like, uh, . . . white on rice. You love piling on, except this time it's personal so you're taking the high road. Good for you, but don't expect everyone else to follow.

Wait a second. Didn't Rutgers hire Junior because of his offensive expertise?

I think anyone called any of these names by their coach and thinks it's "mental abuse" needs to grow a pair.

Hey MaxiePad, if your balls make you take abuse like a little bitch, maybe it would be better if you removed them off. :devilwink:

One of his players should have knocked him out. At times you may get angry, curse, slam the ball on the court etc...but to totally berate someone, push them around and throw stuff at them is abusive. I wouldn't treat an animal that way, and find it disgusting that some people on this board condone this. You guys are cocka-roaches!

You're a fucking fairy

He should have been fired I don't care who his dad is. With him saying he's going to change because he's going to do all this things to change except get help is like an alcoholic saying he wont take another drink without getting help. The guy obviously needs to go though anger management. It will only be a matter of time till this happens again.

...whelp, it looks like Rutgers had no choice in the matter -- credit Rice Jr. for owning up to his actions in this video --> http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=espn:9129136

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers fired basketball coach Mike Rice on Wednesday after a videotape aired showing him shoving, grabbing and throwing balls at players and using gay slurs during practice.

The videotape, broadcast Tuesday on ESPN's "Outside the Lines," prompted sharp criticism from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and the head of the New Jersey Assembly called for Rice to be fired.

With mounting criticism on a state and national level, the school relieved Rice of his duties after three largely unsuccessful seasons at the Big East school. There will be a national search to replace him.
