(Reuters) - A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.

This will be in John Perkins next book

Some illegal people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the illegal chain of command.... whoops... I mean legal chain of command..... illegally.

Apparently the prime minister is pro Isis and the military is pro secularism/the West?

i was thinking the same thing, the government was largely secular until recently. didnt know about the military leanings, but it makes sense.

President Erdoğan is a glamorous shithead who supports ISIS. I don't know much about the PM.

I don't want to visit Turkey so American troops should stay out of there.

- SlyPokerDog foreign policy.

would that be surprising in the least? i would think in this case you would actually support such an operation.
It wouldn't. If I knew more about it, I'd probably root for the coup, but that doesn't mean that I would want rogue CIA agents taking it upon themselves to instigate it.

Now that I think of it, I probably should have said, "Trump-inspired rogue CIA agents," lol...

Well... at least it's good to know that the Turkish people can sit back with a nice big glass of Raki and wait it out. Oh! That's right.... they've pretty much banned the sale of it due to religious law.

Yeah..... I think I might know why the military are favoring a coup! :beatinto:

Is this the first NATO country to have a military coup?

Is it that surprising?! Erdogan was hated by pretty much EVERYBODY in Turkey. And the military has been a shadow government in that country since Kemah Ataturk founded it. It also wouldn't surprise me if certain parties with political or business connections to Russia are behind it. Turkey playing military footsies with Russia was hazardous considering the sanctions Putin could drop on them.

We are fighting war by proxy between the Russians and it is moving to Europe. It will only get worse in the upcoming years as Putin increases funds to political parties in these countries. He's the ultimate "gallow bird" as we Germans say. Hilary, I hope you've got a big swinging pair.

She most definitely has a big swinging pair. Labia Majora.

Well I hope to God she does. She's going up against a guy who idolizes Stalin and probably thinks Lavrentria Beria should have won the Novel Peace Prize.

Shit, my best friend was just over there with his family on business/vacation for two weeks! JUST landed back here TWO days ago!

If you go to Turkey, for god sake don't eat the watermelon!

I think it's some sort of an Obama insult.
I thought he had spied on me in the past perchance. I used to "see" this girl from Turkey named Ozge, and we totally ate watermelon together once about 4 years ago. Phew... I'm saved.

Well most of us Americans are not use to the conditions of the food is prepared in Turkey. We tend to get dysentery there. Some friends and my family went there,
rented a sailboat to cruise the Islands for a couple weeks. I had been there before on business and this time I was going to beat the curse, eat nothing but watermelon and fresh, well washed fruit unless we cooked it on the boat.

About two days into the trip, we met a couple also cruising the Islands, old hands at cruising the Med. Anyway the subject came up and the guy said, For God Sake
Don't Eat the Watermelon! Well hell, too late for me! Sure enough, next day had to start living on Imodium. Needed medical assistance after I got back to the states.

A trip to Ephesus reveled the reason, the fields are watered from ditches of really disgusting water. Of course watermelon is just a veggie tank of water.
