Miller and Cho from Blazers edge

What are they suppose to say? They are not going to make a trade unless it makes sense, they won't make a trade just to make a trade. That only makes sense. I didn't hear anything that was defensive. I would think that anyone thinking they would hear anything other than what they said doesn't have a clue. They are not going to show their hand. Come on, what do you expect?

One other thing, defending Roy isn't to me being defensive if that is what you meant.

Seeing that I have posted pretty much the same thing that was written in this interview, I will have to agree with them.
Yes Brandon is struggling with his game due to his knees. Yes he needs to adjust his game to a faster tempo (but he can do it) and although it is understandable for fans to be frustrated when they expected to see a healthy Oden and a healthy Brandon, they need to show some respect for a players who has worked his ass off for this franchise the last 4 years and try to be patient as his game adapts.

He also said they are working on trades and those of you who think Arenas would have been the solution are idiots. (Paraphrasing there)

On another (somewhat related ) note did you guys listen to Steve Smith last night on the NBA channel take a shot at Whitsitt last night for blowing up the Blazer team that lost to the Lakers? He referred to him as the "Gm who will remain nameless" (or something to that effect.)

I know the two scenarios are different, but I am guessing Paul Allen has not forgotten the fuck ups made that summer.

He shouldn't have fired Dunleavy. He shouldn't have traded Smitty for DA, and killed that chemistry of the team. He shouldn't have traded JO for DD (even if I supported that move).

That summer killed our franchise. We were the best team in the league that year, and if it were not for that ill-fated fourth quarter, we would have had at least 1 title with that roster/coach.

Well that's a relief because I can't recall a single person ever saying we should trade for Gil Arenas.

When Miller threw that straw man argument out there, I was trying to remember anyone in the media advocating we trade for Agent Zero. I couldn't recall one.

Well at least Cho reads hoopsworld and hoopshype. So he pretty much gets wind of anything we get wind of.

He shouldn't have fired Dunleavy.

Actually, he should have fired him sooner.

? Wasn't Derek Anderson a free agent signin?

Whitsitt's mistake was thinking Shawn Kemp still had it. He should've just let Brian Grant go (although he would've got enormous stick for that), fired Dunleavy, and brought in a coach prepared to give Jermaine O'Neal a chance.

On multiple occasions, Miller asked Blazers fans to continue to show respect to Roy despite his struggles. "Brandon Roy has been the guy that turned this franchise around. Rookie of the Year, All Star three times. Hopefully fans don't just turn on Brandon now.
This accusation that rational fans would "turn" on a player because the player is injured and unable to perform is starting to bug me. What decent person would do that? Any "turning" on Brandon is in relation to the perception of his attitude over the past several years, based on the things he says and does. My opinion of Roy has not suddenly changed, or "turned", but has gradually diminished over time. I could be completely full of crap regarding my perception of his attitude, but it is what it is. I will show respect to Roy when he shows respect to his teammates, his coaches, and the fans.

I was not aware that most fans were rational.

Exactly. I feel bad for Brandon as a person that his knees are shot, and I hope he recovers enough to live fairly pain free as he gets older. My beef with Brandon is his me first attitude, and throwing his teammates under the bus. The one that sent me over the edge was saying he wasn't slow until they put someone slow next to him.

My beef with Brandon is his me first attitude, and throwing his teammates under the bus....

I first began to think something was awry when I learned he hadn't invited any of his teammates to his wedding......................yet Z-Bo was there??

Is Roy a bit of a prima donna? From some of his statements, it seems that he certainly has a bit of an inflated ego. But are you guys really such wussies that you get your knickers all in a bunch and stop supporting the guy over his relatively mild transgressions? Give me a break. Let's talk about MJ's comments about his supporting cast or Kobe's trade demands and pouting prior to the Lakers being given Pau Gassol. LeBron James anyone? I guess we should never have a superstar here in Portland because it would interfere with our sensibilities about how teammates should never say anything bad about each other. Roy's a piker compared to the superegos most of these guys have.

Completely agree - Dumbleavy was a terrible coach and should have been let go if for nothing else than his gross misuse of Arvydas Sabonis. What a complete waste of his talent we experienced. The Reign Man signing remains the biggest mistake of that era (Detlef being second).

Nice post. 90% of them act that way. (Don't get me started on Drexler) I don't like it either. But you might as well get over it because it happens all the time. Now I am not saying he should not be called out for it, but as long as he can ball, it will be forgotten in time. It's not like he raped someone. (Bad example: that doesn't matter either)

But he does need to adjust to his teammates game.

In a way you could say that fans have turned on Roy due to his injuries. Because his "it's important for the team to maximize me" attitude existed prior to this season. The fanbase (I'm aware this doesn't apply to certain individuals) was fine with that when he was a top-10/15 player. Now that he isn't, he's worthy of contempt in the eyes of the fanbase (again, doesn't apply to every individual).

While I understand that stars/superstars should be built around and average/below average players should not (and therefore his comments seem more egregious now), it would be nice if people understood that it's hard for any person to handle a completely changed reality quickly. Roy's mind is still adjusting to the fact that he isn't what he used to be. Most fans commenting on all this would have at least as much trouble handling such a sudden reversal in fortunes.

So, has Roy handled all this with the utmost grace? No....but few people would. Going from face of the franchise and city golden boy to "when can we dump this guy?" is not a change that can be accepted and internalized overnight (and I'd call a month and half overnight for something like this).

Let' also not forget that Roy at one time was un-easy about dominating the ball so much. He asked his teammates if he was, or if he was shooting too much? The answer back was no. "You need to take over the game"

Well that was then and this is now. Circumstances change. But regardless of whether or not it was "fun Basketball" to watch, the team improved each year. It worked when Travis and Blake were hitting the open jumpers. So I can kind of understand his reluctancy to change so quickly. I don't agree with him, but I do understand it. He was told by his teammates and his coach, "you are the man". At at that time he was the only man we could depend on. The others had their chances to step up and didn't. So I can see why he is acting stubborn. He will get over it.

Well put.

Add the fact that Roy actually apologized to his teammates quickly - probably because there is a good chance that he was asked about what changed, answered what did - and did not think what the side-effects of his comments were - and it seems to me that this is not really that big a deal. Brandon was a good guy before - and he did not change overnight. He might have had to think better about what he said and reconcile his health situation with his words - but at the end of the day, this guy still is responsible as anyone for the transformation of this franchise from the jail-blazers days to a team that people actually care for and want to succeed.

From a "human" perspective, you are dead on. It is easy to forget that sometimes.

Everybody involved - from PA to the fans - need to separate the issues here. You can't sacrifice the good of the team for one individual. At the same time, there is no point in holding personal hostility towards Roy (or Oden).

I just wish some people could understand that being critical of a player's performance does not equate to "turning" on them.

And then there's the opposite viewpoint--meritocracy, not favoritism. Instead of special loyalty to a player, we should do what's best for the team. If Roy is kaput, and other teams don't realize it yet, then trade him while he's still overvalued. It's a business, not a college program.

If that was meant as an opposite viewpoint to mine...it isn't opposing what I said. I was talking about fans having some understanding, on a human level as oldmangrouch said. It had nothing to do with his on-court abilities and what steps the team should take. The team should be looking to move him if a good deal comes along and I have advocated a bench role for Roy.

I think Roy is a very diminished player and has limited value, but I don't think he deserves to be vilified.
