Yeah! I believe you can trade a combo of 26, 27 & 28 picks for, oh, say a 14 or 15 pick.
Yes, occasional gems show up late in the draft but I'd say that is probably less than 5%. Quality but not great, 15% or so. Serviceable role players 25%. Splinter-catchers, D-Leaguers and flunk-outs, 50%.
There you go, my pull numbers from the air analysis of the probability of quality in late 1st round picks.
I don't mind going for picks if the picks are decent, but a quality player for a later 1st pick? No thanks. I'm sure there is better.
I don't agree, not for a mid-late first rounder. Sure history is littered with several examples of getting a good/great player late in the draft, but the odds aren't good. Our track record in the past few years picking exactly in this draft range isn't very good either.
What is a good bet of happening, is our team taking a severe step backward without Miller. If there is anything to take away from this year, it's the building of confidence of our young guys -- Aldridge, Batum, Matthews -- and I don't think there's any question Miller makes the game easier for them and has fostered their development. They're playing the right way with Miller at helm and that's an investment I think will pay many more dividends than the remote chance a late first rounder becomes a player for us. Stay competitive for the sake of the young guys we already have. They'll learn and grow a lot more and faster.
Also, this isn't a Melo situation. We don't have to trade Miller. Even re-sign him after next year if the point guard position is still unsettled.
I'd prefer to keep Miller through the end of the season - as long as we have a chance to make the play-offs. Which we do, especially with Camby and Roy coming back soon. I'd rather see our young players get some much needed play-off experience - even if they lose, than getting nothing more than a mid-20s pick from Atlanta for the only serviceable PG we have on the roster and giving up all hope of making the play-offs.
It's both too early and too late to tank. Too early, because we still have a legitimate shot at making the play-offs, and to late, because even if we're in the lottery we'd likely be picking 12 or 13 in a weak, shallow draft. We're not "catching" Cleveland, Minnesota, Sacramento, Washington, or Toronto for one of the top lottery spots.
