After months of controversy within the Miss America organization, executives announced Tuesday that the nearly century-old pageant will no longer judge contestants on their physical appearance.

Effective this year, the show will scrap the famed swimsuit competition. Instead, the organization said in a press release, “each candidate will participate in a live interactive session with the judges, where she will highlight her achievements and goals in life, and how she will use her talents, passion and ambition to perform the job of Miss America.”

The changes come on the heels of a major shakeup of the Miss America board. Last December, chief executive Sam Haskell and board chairman Lynn Weidner stepped down after a story by HuffPost revealed disparaging emails sent by pageant leaders and staffers about former contestants, using crude language.

Shortly after, Gretchen Carlson — the former Fox News anchor who won Miss America in 1989 — was named as the organization’s new chairman. Carlson released a statement Tuesday that also credited the Me Too movement with overhauling the event. Carlson, who sued Fox News chief executive officer Roger Ailes for sexual harassment in 2016 and received a $20 million settlement, has become one of the most outspoken advocates for victims in the Me Too era.

We are no longer a pageant. Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent and empowerment,” Carlson said in a statement. ”We’re experiencing a cultural revolution in our country with women finding the courage to stand up and have their voices heard on many issues. Miss America is proud to evolve as an organization and join this empowerment movement.”

Carlson also appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday morning and emphasized that the “pageant” will now be known as a “competition.” The organization’s goal is to be “open, transparent and inclusive,” she said, particularly to women who may not have felt comfortable participating in the past.

“We’ve heard from a lot of young women who say, ‘We’d love to be a part of your program, but we don’t want to be out there in high heels in a swimsuit.’ So guess what? You don’t have to do that anymore” Carlson said. She added that the telecast will also revamp the evening gown competition: “We’re no longer judging women when they come out in their chosen attire, their evening wear, whatever they choose to do. It’s going to be what comes out of their mouth that we’re interested in, when they talk about their social impact initiatives.”

When “GMA” anchor Amy Robach asked about potential ratings drop, given that some viewers may want to see women in swimsuits, Carlson dismissed the idea.

“Interestingly enough, that’s not a highly rated part of the competition. People actually like the talent part of the competition,” Carlson said.
I'm as progressive as the next guy but I'm old fashioned enough to want to see an attractive Miss America. They can have some other kind of competition for the most brainy woman and that woman can be as ugly as she can be. In that competition I'm not judging on beauty.

It's kind of like a body building contest with a guy who never exercised in his life. Doesn't make sense, does it?

I always thought the swimsuit competition was stupid. All the girls look the same anyway.

They should have been fully nude so we could compare nipples and such.

Blasphemy. There's nothing wrong with seeing a good looking woman in a swimsuit. In fact, I deem it highly desirable.

It's going to turn into the same crap that we see with the Rose Festival princesses.

In a city that is like 80% white, we somehow have a Rose Festival court that's like 90% minority every year. It's amazing!

And here was 2017.

If someone saw this picture and didn't know anything about Portland, they would probably think that we're one diverse fuckin city!

Did you read the whole post? I wouldn't care if they started out in a swimsuit.

I don't care if minorities are over represented or not, I just care about how hot they are. These babes ain't exactly babes. I might want to take one to a spelling 'B' but that's where it ends.

Hahahahahaha. I'll have to look her up but the hottest girl in a movie I recently watched wasn't Rachel McAdams and she is smoking. Be right back.

That's my point. They won't be hot. They'll be the "feel good" pick.

So, I'd have to google her but I heard a girl singer months ago that was terrible. I knew she had to be super hot OR related to someone. Not hot, Rob Schneider's daughter. Guess it pays to know a b lister even.

It's like a lot of those singing shows. Pretty sure most of the people on The Voice have some kind of sob story. Either they survived cancer, or they were homeless, or they're gay, or they're just really really young.

Hell, they didn't even let Maren Morris audition.

The voice is only good during the blind auditions. The whole show should be that way.

I've watched Miss America for years off and on. I used to love watching the gay dancers in the opening number, lol. And my ex-girlfriend from middle school made 1st runner up one year. That was exciting. My first response to this headline was "oh brother." It's always been dumb so it feels like let's make the "dumb contest" no longer be dumb. But after a few seconds, I get it. We're past this. I expect we'll no longer have Blazers Dancers, Lakers Girls, etc. I know they choose to do it and they are paid, but it's pretty embarrassing having women leaning on each other's asses in the tightest little shorts. Our country moved past this along time ago but the NBA hasn't caught up. It's just a bad example to set for young boys (not to mention young girls) at sporting events. The message sent is "Strong boys demonstrate their skills as the star of the event while the little girls shake their asses during timeouts."

What the fuck is wrong with you, Nate? Why is it crap for people of color to be chosen? Percentages don't matter. What about the centuries of time that POCs got to do none of this? I'm not gonna call you names but re-read your post. It's textbook racism. Not to mention sexist (i.e. You saying it's crap if women don't wear swimsuits in a contest that has chosen to redefine itself).

Also the kids in each high school vote for who their own princesses. This isn't some grand conspiracy to keep white girls off of the Rose Festival Court.

Actually, no, it's a politically-rigged process with selections ultimately by "a panel of judges".

  1. Is the Rose Festival Court a popularity contest?
No. Each Rose Festival princess is selected by a panel of judges who are not acquainted with any of the candidates. These judges include community members chosen by Rose Festival Board Members and representatives from your school. Each Portland area school is required to conduct a student vote. The student vote makes up 50% of the total score, with the community judging score completing the remaining 50% to determine the Princess at your school.
