They picked him over other players because he'll work for free. He's willing to work for free because he'll be marketing himself for his new contract. The high visibility, and playing the role of an expert analyst, will obtain higher offers.

Former NBA All Star Steve Francis played for both the Houston Rockets and the Portland Trailblazers in his career, so it shouldn't have been surprising to see him show up at an NBA playoff game. Only he didn't go to the Rockets-Blazers game, he was at the Chicago Bulls-Washington Wizards game instead. Oh, and did we mention, he was wearing one of HIS jerseys.

He didn't do that, did he? Of course he did.
