Moe Harkless to Portland for 2nd rounder

found this very interesting on harkless and hard work/motor issues other articles alluded too. sounds like the kid is and has worked his ass off trying to get better. pay special attention to the "making the all nba defensive team" as a primary goal entering the league. aloha

I like the sound of this:
In the few games he played 30 or more minutes, he averaged 16 points (on 53.8 percent shooting from the field), 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 3.5 steals.

I could live with that.

Orlando ran 2 teams in the Orlando Summer League, yet Harkless was on neither.

http://www.nba.com/summerleague/2015/teams/

He was on no other team, either.

In that BasketballInsiders article a few posts above, he says he plans to hang out with his Orlando teammates in Las Vegas later in the summer, where they are working out. But not play. The article infers that like Darius Miles, he places teammate relationships higher than the actual playing.

Is that what it infers? I missed that part. I did see this though:

"Then, last year, Harkless basically fell out of the rotation altogether for some reason. Under former head coach Jacque Vaughn and then interim coach James Borrego, he played in just 45 games (starting only four) and averaged 15 minutes per game. There were many nights where he was a healthy scratch from the lineup. His Magic teammates were confused and privately questioned the decision.

Throughout the year, Harkless tried his best to remain positive. He was supportive of his teammates while also working hard and staying prepared for the limited opportunities when he was given significant minutes."

The last half of the article, he keeps saying how impressed he is that others try so hard, and he wants to be like them, and he loves being around the guys, because off-court is more important than on-court, yada yada. Darius Miles was mentally a child who saw basketball as a social phenomenon, with his team as his family.

the articles date was june third, so was putting in time before summer league practices even started. only three olando players from last years team were on the two summerleague squads and they were rookies payton and Gordon who missed time with injury. don't know anything about marble. seems they had plenty of other players they needed to look at. don't forget an entirely new head coach and staff to evaluate there also. darius miles comparisons seem extremely premature and purely an unsupportable reach on your part in finding player similarities. if there are others that you can document I apologize. aloha

Orlando SL ran July 4-10. We traded for him July 12. The June 3 article date is irrelevant to whether he wanted to play in SL. As host, Orlando had to fill TWO teams, totalling 32 players, per the roster link I gave.

For a guy entering a contract year, who everyone said was shorted minutes by both Orlando head coaches last year, I would think he would have jumped at playing in Summer League.

I would think he'd be battering down the door, beginning 3 days ago when we got him, to get into a game on our team in Las Vegas.

Why doesn't Olshey call him, measure his motivation, and fly him to Vegas? The guy says in the article he's planning to come to Vegas later in the summer to hang out with his Orlando teammates, while they work.

Why isn't CJ playing? Leonard? Have they "made it" yet?

I am only guessing(but then again so are your suppositions) that in a contract year his agent would try and have him avoid injuries in his contract year. didn't see any other 3rd or for that matter second year players on their squads either.

Yes, they are sure things to last for at least several more years in the league. In contrast, Harkless is on the ropes, abandoned by 2 head coaches last year. Then a new 3rd one, Scott Skiles, traded him to us.

With his Heartless reputation of lethargy, he needs to reverse that rep, but doesn't seem to care. Why do you think we got the #10 pick in the Lillard draft for only a 2nd round pick? Because Olshey's a genius, or because Heartless sucks?

If this turns into another Afflalo fiasco, it'll be back to What's My Line? for Olshey.

even the blazers home page only quotes woj with no official league approval announcement yet so bashing the player for not being in vegas begging for a chance to play for our summer league team once more seems extremely premature

Summer league?? He's a 3 year veteran, those guys don't play in summer league.

You can offer a player a second chance - but they have to decide what to do with it.

I want good old-fashioned entertainment, like Bob Whitsitt. You know want what these players need? The coaches to yell at them. I want to see yelling, and more yelling. Every practice, every game. And the GM should be yelling at them, too. And come out onto the floor during games and yell. Not just in time outs. And I want to see Olshey yelling till he's red, then turn around and yell at 20,000 fans. And then flip them off. And go into the stands. This could be a good season, if management thinks about the entertainment angle, as well as how best to develop a journeyman team. Bring Bill Fitch out of retirement. I don't buy that heart attack excuse.

Because we got a decent sample size of them. Yes they need to still improve, but right now its FAR more important to burn the new guys to start assessing what we have.

I don't think you got my point. I was responding to his post about Harkless not playing in SL.

Meanwhile, Gerald Green goes to Miami for the minimum and Perry Jones to the Celts for cap space.

Maybe it's nit-picking, but why would you want Harkless over either of those guys?

The players might have been the most pampered during the Whitsitt era...

I don't think he was doing a lot of yelling. Either was Dunleavy.

Green wouldn't want to come here, and is a knucklehead. Jones was traded by OKC specifically because of how much we made them pay; no chance they would send him here.

Sometimes, what we might want doesn't actually matter.

Per Casey Holdahl: Blazers acquire @moe_harkless from Orlando for 2020 second-round pick (protected between 31 and 55) http://Rip.City/bmzu

Sounds like Moe is coming to Vegas for the balance of Summer League, though I don't know if that means he's playing, or just practicing and hanging out.
