And that it was on purpose! Leonard denies it.

After missing the last two games with a concussion, Trail Blazers forward Moe Harkless is listed as probable for tonight’s game and will play assuming he passes the final test of the NBA’s mandated concussion protocol. If he does, head coach Terry Stotts says Harkless play no more than 20 minutes off the bench Monday night.

Turns out, it was a Meyers Leonard elbow delivered inadvertently during a scrimmage last week that sidelined Harkless, or at least that’s how Leonard tells it. Harkless, on the other hand, has his doubts.

“He definitely did,” said Harkless when asked if Leonard took aim at his nose. “He got tired of it and took his frustration out on me, unfortunately.”

Anyone who has watched Meyers Leonard during his three seasons in Portland knows he’s been on the receiving end of his fair share of shots to the head, be they accidental or otherwise, which made Harkless’ accusation all the more insulting.

“One hundred percent false,” said Leonard of the insinuation. “Moe knows he’s lying. Moe lied on Twitter. He’s trying to make me look bad for some reason. As a guy who has been hit in the head at least once a game for my entire career, which is well over 150 games, I know what’s it’s like. And no, I didn’t do it on purpose, period.”

But Harkless isn’t so sure, and thus, is pondering his options with regard to payback. He’s already considered the frequency with which Leonard gets hit in the head, which is factoring into his plan of attack.

“I know where I’m going for,” said Harkless. “I won’t say it on the record, but I know where I’m going for.”

Leonard’s response?

“That’s fine. I set a lot more screens than he does on guards, so therefore, his payback will be much worse if he decides to hit me on purpose.”

Keep your heads on a swivel guys.

(I would hope this would go without saying, but for the record, both players are joking.)

By the way, both were joking!

Through the whole thing I was thinking "please be joking... please be joking..... please be joking..... YAY!"
Harkless is just jealous that Leonard was drafted first.

Yeah. Sure. Joking. Uh-huh. There is truth in all "humor".

I love having an "elbows of death" player on our squad.

So much for all that deep team bonding in the offeason. Meyers is channeling his inner Laimbeer.

Good, let's hope he also channels his outer Laimbeer - the one who averaged > 12rpg four years in a row, made 4 all-star teams in a five year stretch, played in 80, or more, games 12 straight seasons and won two NBA championships.

And, is currently in the top 50 all-time in career:

Offensive Rebounds (32)
Defensive Rebounds (18)
Total Rebounds (32)
Personal Fouls (20)
Defensive Rebound Pct. (17)
Total Rebound Pct. (45)
Offensive Rating (40)
Defensive Win Shares (45)

He's also top 100 in many more career categories, and advanced stats, most notably:
Win Shares (65)
Win Shares/48 (97)
Defensive Box Plus/Minus (89)
VORP (73)
ELO (97)

The only thing that has kept him out of the Hall of Fame was how much he was hated as a player. If Meyers Leonard can have anything close to a similar NBA career, I'll b thrilled beyond belief.

I hated Laimbeer beyond all measure and wished every stinking day he was on our team.....

I would put Charles Oakley in the same category as Laimbeer.... and Dennis Rodman. I love the guys who were hard nosed, played good defense, and messed with the other guy's minds.

Oh, I absolutely hated him at the time, but in hindsight, I acknowledge just how important his contributions were to those DET championship teams. Defense and rebounding wins titles and that's what he brought - that and six HARD fouls..

There was so much more intimidation back then.... and hated rivalries. I can't even think of the last time there was a rivalry like the Bulls/Pistons.

Maybe the Heat/Knicks? Or the Lakers/Kings? But that was 15 years ago...

How about Najera? He isn't good enough to really be mentioned with those you mentioned, but same style of play.

I like most people hated Laimbeer more than I words could say. But I got to admit, any guy that goes into the Boston Garden and spits on Lucky the Leprechaun, can't be ALL bad. I think most of his peers only had a problem with him because he was dirty. Other than that, he was an amazing competitor.

And, at the exact same time, you also had the Lakers/Celtics (McHale clothesline of Rambis) and Pistons/Celtics (Chief bitchslapping Laimbeer).

Such intense rivalries back them. Guys really and truly hated their opponents. And, as rough and physical as it was, I don't remember any serious injuries as a result of anything that happened on the court between those teams.

Lamebeer would not have survived, let alone thrived, in a league with straight-up officiating.

It goes unsaid, which means it need not go said, that Casey's article wins the Official Jlprk Seal of Approval.
