Gasquet, Monfils Fly Through Monte Carlo Openers

There's no place like home away from home.

French Davis Cup teammates Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils both dropped bagel sets on experienced opposition flying through their Monte Carlo Rolex Masters openers today.

in a battle of brilliant one-handed backhands, Gasquet created sharper angles sweeping Nicolas Almagro, 6-4, 6-0, in 68 minutes.

Gael Monfils dropped a 7-5, 6-0 defeat on Gilles Muller in Monte Carlo.

Roger Federer strolls to victory on his comeback at Monte Carlo Rolex Masters

On his return from the first surgery of his professional career, Roger Federer stroked his backhand as if he had never been away. In the highlight of Tuesday's action at the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, Federer strolled through in straight sets, while Andy Murray grimaced and cursed his way to a much more bumpy win.

Federer, who tore his meniscus two months ago, showed his movement was as crisp and decisive as ever, belying his 34 years. He played an aggressive match tactically, repeatedly rushing the net and harrying Guillermo Garcia-Lopez – the world No 38 from Spain – into a slew of errors.

Federer looked impressively fresh – both mentally and physically – as he brought up his 6-3, 6-4 victory in 74 minutes. His ease and grace contrasted with another sticky performance from Murray, whose form since his latest Davis Cup heroics in early March has been erratic. Against Pierre-Hugues Herbert, an elegant French qualifier, Murray romped through the first set but then handed over the second with some sloppy play, which included no fewer than three dropped service games.
