OT: Mookie Blaylock on Life Support

JONESBORO, Ga. -- Mookie Blaylock, former NBA player for the Atlanta Hawks, is on life support following a car accident.

The vehicle collision happened just after noon on Friday, near Tara Boulevard and Dixon Road in Clayton County. The wreck, according to Jonesboro Police officer Franklin Allen, involved a van and a car.

The car, driven by Blaylock, burst into flames on impact. The van was being driven by the woman, her identity is not yet released.

Blaylock and one other woman were both airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center. She is in critical condition.

Horrible news... he was always one of my favorite players when I was a kid in Atlanta... he'll be in my prayers for sure...

Re: OT: Mookie Blaylock on Life Support

Mookie's 1st 3 years were as a Net, with one of my favorite coaches, Bill Fitch...played with Bowie, Dudley, and Petrovic...with the 2nd pick in the weak 1991 draft, Fitch was outraged the Nets drafted tiny Kenny Anderson over Billy Owens, who had looked like a superstar in international play...so feisty Fitch gave 3rd-year Blaylock double the minutes rookie Anderson got. Owens continued the Syracuse hex and had an injury-filled and shortened career.

When Mookie was better than Kenny due to Fitch's revenge, that's when the league knew he had something special.

"Tiny" Kenny Anderson?

Anderson - 6'0

Blaylock - 6'0

Mookie Blaylock was the original name for one of my favorite bands of all-time.

Stacey King and Blaylock should have won a title against that Kansas team led by Danny Manning.

And that band tweeted out a special message to Mookie today.

Former NBA star and Hawks player Mookie Blaylock was one of two people critically injured Friday afternoon in a head-on collision in Clayton County, according to police.

Blaylock, 46, was driving a Cadillac Escalade northbound on Tara Boulevard when for unknown reasons, he crossed over the median and into a southbound lane, Jonesboro police Chief Franklin Allen told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Blaylock’s vehicle struck another vehicle head-on, injuring two people, whose names were not released, and himself, Franklin said.

All three were transported to Atlanta Medical Center, where Blaylock was flown and was on life support and unresponsive, Franklin said. A female passenger in the second vehicle was bleeding internally, he said.

Re: OT: Mookie Blaylock on Life Support

On Friday evening, 11Alive learned from Jonesboro Police Chief Allen that another person involved in the crash died. 41-year-old Monica Murphy of Gwinnett County passed around 10:00 p.m.

Wow... so prayers not only to Mookie but to everyone involved... sounds like just a horrible situation all around...

Mookie's also had problems with marijuana in the past... I hope they didn't find any in his system, that could get ugly...

On a lighter note, I don't think I knew Mookie had two twins that played football for Kentucky.

As for Pearl Jam, that's always one of my favorite go-to obscure trivia questions. I didn't realize it was that well known. I guess ya'll are in the northwest though...

Re: OT: Mookie Blaylock on Life Support

why do you think the album was "10"? ;)

Noticed that after I posted. I checked the OT forum first but didn't think it would be in the Blazers forum.

Sounds like Mookie is doing better, and he's been upgraded to guarded but critical condition.

His health seems to be getting better, but apparently he's getting charged with vehicular manslaughter plus driving w/ a suspended license and one other charge. The video that goes with the link says they haven't checked his blood yet for drugs/alcohol and that his family said he's been having seizures the past few months.

Allen says police are working to determine the cause and that alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor. Blaylock told investigators he blacked out just before the wreck
