I'm completely non-religious and not some hippie-dippy wingnut, but if you haven't fasted before I really recommend giving it a shot. I try to do 2-5 fasts of 36 hours every month. Badass way to drop a few pounds and make you appreciate that food is really just fuel.
I stop eating around 7pm at night, skip the entire next day, then have a reasonable breakfast (bacon and eggs and coffee, usually). Only real hard part is between around 6pm and sleep on that second day. Just have to power through it. Otherwise, you literally spend nearly half the fast asleep.
Not a typical fast, I suppose. I drink lots of coffee/diet soda and will drink a little booze (doesn't take much).
It's not the main reason I've dropped 80 pounds over the past 2.5 years, but it's helped. A lot of people like 18/6-type plans, where you fast for 18 hours and eat for 6. But I never cared much for them.
