I don't know who's available, neither do you and neither does Sather until he gets off his wrinkly ass and calls someone. Not all trades that happen are of players well documented to be available.

That's a nice defense. "I don't know who is, so its on Sather to make some miracle player who can lead us through PIT/BOS to fall out the sky, oh and not give up that much for him" The league has shown in past years that the deadline is absolutely a sellers market. If you wanna buy you have to pay through the nose. Anyone remember giving up two 2nd rounders and a 3rd for Ryane "i cant even tie my shoes anymore" Clowe? That really helped.

oh so trades can't be made before the trade deadline. Someone tell Bettman the NYI/BUF GM's broke the rules so they can be disciplined.

Yeah and look at the wondrous move the Islanders made...

ah, the lovely view of hindsight, lol. Point is, when you mention "and who is it we would trade for?", this is an example of a trade that no one really knew about / expected at the time but happened because the initial inquiry was made. Just like this trade any other may pop up that you don't know about. This is also an example of a trade that was made where the buying team (Isles) were able to get a player young enough that will help in the future.

Whiny bandwagoners always crack me up. Don't worry, we'll hold a seat for you.

"Sell now, it's mid-January and we're 2pts out"...lol, what a farce.

Vanek is a UFA. What convoluted disillusioned world do you live in? Young enough that will help in the future, you seriously have no idea what you are talking about... and yeah I'm just a bandwagon fan. Let me get this straight you want this team to go buying to chase a playoff run and I'm the impatient one? This is getting too ridiculous. Have fun in fantasy world.

i agree. It's a great example of how morons don't quit on a team at the deadline b/c they only have a "2% chance to win".

That Kings team had and will always of had a much better shot at the cup than these Rangers. A blind man could see that.

A favorite to win the cup at the beginning of the season with a core in place that could easily be brought over into the next year with no changes. great example dude.

Ah, so preseason rankings is what determines whether you should sell or buy at the deadline. I get it.

NYR ranked 7th in pre-season rankings here

Ranked 8th here

Ranked 3rd here

just stop it with the lame excuses, you're embarrassing yourself, hahaha.

oh wait, here comes the excuse. "these sources are not credible" hahaha

you're a joke.

The one time this team was supposed to go buy help was at the 2011/2012 deadline and I'll admit then I thought they were fine and didn't need the help, should of kept the youth instead of go get rentals. I was wrong then. If they go on an absolute tear and pull themselves into the top 4 in this conference then yeah sure go add players... but the likelihood of that happening... well you know what I think.

Yeah I'm a joke. You just called Thomas Vanek a young player that will help the Islanders future.

Kramer would do that stress forehead rub, talk about how he bought the rangers earlier in the year when the board of directors fired the ceo and brought in that guy with a great resume from a company who did things differently... then back track, start listing problems and start stuttering about an uncertain future. SELL SELL SELL.

there is no way the rangers will sell anytime soon. to sell would tell their fan base don't bother to come to the billion dollar arena. will they be sellers at the deadline, I would hope so. this team is far from a couple of moves to win the cup. that is being realistic. Jeff Carter is not going to make this team an instant success. there are too many holes. we also do not have enough talent to bring in top flight players that are needed to win the cup. so that leaves us with selling off UFA's before the deadline and be a sad sack of shit this season in hopes that the additional picks in a rich draft will make the turn around a quick one.

thank you, thank you, thank you

The only thing they can really do right now since they're in no-man's land in Jan. is at least get something for somebody like DZ who we know is expendable at this point. It obviously won't be a game changing player, but maybe an expiring UFA who can add something for the rest of the year, plus a prospect. Other than that it's too early to trade RC or Turnoverardi. I'd tend to side with Mig and Al on the team is just too far away with what they have and may add, plus Nash looking like he is isn't going to just take off all of a sudden. But at the same time it's only Jan so wait and see on selling bigger pieces.

" Love him, but when Mats Zuccarello is your best forward... your not going anywhere. "

And why is that? Zuccarello is the Rangers best playmaker, not their best forward. He creates, and makes those on the ice with him, better. He leads the team in points for a reason, and without him, where do you think they'd be? Don't diminish what he's done, be amazed that he's becoming the player that this team needs. I'd like for the Rangers to find another just like him.

Like I said I love zucc. Appreciate everything he has done for the team and hope we resign him for a fair price next year. That being said he is supposed to be the nice player with playmaking ability bolstering your top six as the fifth or sixth best forward. Right now he's the best forward or at the very least top three. In a perfect world he's playing this good and so is Nash, stepan, Callahan, Richards, etc. when kreider, zucc, and pouliot are playing better than those four the team has issues.

Mig, Kreider already better than stepan, richards and callahan and closing in now on the ballerina

It's too early to make a decision but I dont see this team falling out of playoff contention. I see them improving slightly vs getting worse slightly over the 2nd half. That will keep them in the top 8 spots in the weak East. Do I think we can win the cup? No, but 31's point about the Kings is valid. You dont always know.

If Nash pulls his head out of his azzz like he is starting to do AND Henrik plays like he played the past couple years this team can beat anyone in a playoff series in the East. Anyone. As unlikely as it sounds on paper, they can also win multiple rounds. Gotta get there first.

I am more optimistic about next year then this year though.

I would make moves if it helps the team next year as well. I really want a guy like Moulson but his cost will be high and you better be able to resign him.

We are also just as flawed as some teams behind us. Any could be a little better with the right deals, but so what? We agree most of the time 31, but no deals are making us a team that could really challenge for a cup this year. This team doesn't even have an identity, let alone proven winners and playoff performers. Yes, any miracle could happen if you get in, but rarely does. Might be smart to wait till the deadline to make deals, but we should be sellers, not buyers. the entire organization needs to be upgraded.

Rangers fanatics keep the faith and don't quit on their team in January while Rangers followers jump ship in January and claim that they know that the team isn't going to succeed to pat themselves on the back and proclaim themselves hockey savants. Nash statistically is due to hit a scoring streak as should Stepan and we've all seen Hank play better hockey, his problems this year seem more mental than physical. The Rangers are still somewhat in limbo shaking Tortoiserella's malaise from their bones and absorbing AV's up tempo offense, their PP is 7th in the NHL and PK is 8th, very important in the postseason.

Depends on what your definitions of fanatics, followers, and success are. Also, PP in the playoffs are not as important as you might think. LA's was atrocious and Boston's was awful in the years they won it all. Pitt and Chi I believe both had excellent ones. Point is, excellent or even a good PP is not mandatory. You can win it without one. I do believe a good PK is necessary. Playoff hockey is typically more disciplined, with less special teams play.

Pretty sure Boston won the cup with the worst powerplay in the league... Fanatics/followers well whatever you want to call people on this board. Everyone wants to see the team succeed. How we think they should go about getting there doesn't determine their level of "fandom" to the team.

Nailed it on the fandom thing Mig. I also looked up PP and PK rankings for the last 5 playoff winners. If I stopped with the last 3, PP would look really unimportant. Make of this what you want. The last 5 cup winners going backwards, their PP and PK % and rank among the 16 playoff teams those years.

2013-Chi PP 11.4%/13th PK 90.7%/3rd
2012-LA PP 12.8%/12th PK 92.1%/1st (tied with StL)
2011-Bos PP 11.4%/14th PK 84.4%/6th
2010-Chi PP 22.5%/5th PK 83.3/4th
2009-Pitt PP 20.6/7th PK 83.3/5th

Didn't know the exact stats thanks for posting, I just remembered NBC not shutting up about how bad Bostons power play was when they were playing the Canucks in the finals.
