We did a thread on 1 hit wonders and I think one on who was I the top 5 or 10 of all time, but what about most overrated?

I realize this could/will turn into "bands/singers I personally think suck", but its probably a nice break from the clustefuck thread about proving atheists are terrorists or whatever it was.

As for my choices, I'm not sure. I DO think Springstein is overrated, but I'm not sure he would qualify for what I'm trying to get at.

And just because it makes it a little easier, I think we should exclude rap and country.

OK, I'll probably get shot, but........Dillon and the Grateful Dead.

(Disclaimer: I do realize that Dillon was a timely/gifted lyricist, but still..............)

I can see that with the Dead.

classic:
+1 to springstein, dead, stones
add doors

most overrated hard rock band is by FAR metallica

While I like a few of their songs, I meet a lot of huge gigantic Rush fans, and I am like what's the big deal? Average band in my opinion. I am expecting that I will get a bunch of responses saying that they are incredibly underrated.

Hey, Zybot, what's with all the pig statues up there in Seattle?

I didn't know there were that many. I have lived up here since Oct. 2010. Sombody ran into that pig statute at Pike Place last year some time. I am not sure what the deal is with it. It probably has something to do with "taking the pig to market" or something like that.

Judas Priest
Rolling Stones
Notorious BIG
Bruce Springsteen
David Bowie

Although I don't know much about Judas Priest, the rest I can totally agree with.

I can see those too. Even Metallica.

Well, it depends on who you ask. They aren't promoted like others (Bon Jovi, for example), and they ARE underrated. But I can see how for some it might seem odd for their fans are so obsessed with them.

I'm probably gonna get shot but I think nirvana was way overrated.

Totally!!

Not saying they didn't have some good hits, but good fucking grief, you'd think they were the New Kids on the Block or something!

*btw, that's not me being a smart ass to your comment, just being funny with the comparison. But I do agree, I always felt they were way overrated.

I didn't take offense at all. Yeah I never understood why they were so popular. I loved sound garden though.

That is too funny! I was thinking the same thing, but was too chicken to post.

Oh, and now that I'm feeling my oats....add Green Day. ;)

holy crap, we should just stop talking politics because so far I haven't really disagreed with anyone in this thread.

 OK, then throw in some Black Eyed Peas for good measure. :D

Isn't that some saying. Three things you just don't talk about? Politics, religion and fight club?

You're gonna laugh....I saw Fight Club for the first time about a month ago.

my list (as of right now):

Green Day
Stones
Springsteen (decided to include him)
Nirvana
Bon Jovi
Metallica (in as much as mainstream. They have only a few hits the average person would recognize)
Black Eye Peas (esp Fergie. This is about as close to the modern era of music I'm going to go, as i think they're ALL overrated)

I'm sure I'll augment this list as the thread continues. There are some oldies I could include, but I don't think it's fair to dump on Chicago and Fleetwood Mac (because their overrating, imho, stems from having been flooded on the airwaves the last 20 years).

Just don't be talkin' squat about Neil Diamond!!

I can agree on the list so far.

Rush suffers a little because they kind of lost their creative edge after the mid '80s. But they had a string of 7 or 8 albums in a row over a decade that were amazingly unique and creative - 2112, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings etc., and they aren't really rated with the GOAT like the stones or metallica etc. Pretty hard to make a case for them being most overrated even if they're not you're favorite.

I don't care for most Floyd, but what they did was so special and creative that i would never consider them for most overrated.

I actually like him, but I think he's "rated" about right.

Lol one of my most favorite movies! Did you like it?

Amazing concept! Yes, yes I did. Did this movie effectively put Norton on the proverbial map? He was amazing.

I think American history x did that. I can't remember which movie came first.

BEP is a tough one. Sure, they're popular. Very VERY popular. But who actually rates them (aside from 12 year old girls). It's like saying the latest transformers movie (#2 last year) is overrated.

They peaked with Joints and Jams.

Saw him in concert a few years ago at Philips Arena (free suite tix). Gotta say, his performance was amazing......particularly for a man approaching 70! HUGE energy exuded by that man!

that is a valid point. It's hard to take seriously groups that make a lot of their money off of young pre-teens and young teens. They're (stereotypically) easily swayed and their ability to judge talent isn't really formed yet. When a 12 year old tells me that Josh Bieber is the most talented singer ever, I take it with a grain of salt.

I think Julius kind of hit it on the head for me. They don't get a lot of fanfare, but their fans are pretty intense about how good Rush is and they can't understand why I think they are average. So, yes they don't qualify as overrated, but their fans think they are gods and can't fathom why all rock fans don't worship them.
