Most Overrated MCs

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting THE DREAM:</div><div class="quote_post">End of discussion.</div>

Why? You didn't prove anything.

1. I never said that Kanye was a GREAT MC. In fact, the only reason that his name came up is because I put him on my list of Mcs that are overrated. We both agree that he's not that great of an MC so I don't get who you're arguing with.

2. You didn't say anything to prove that DMX and Luda are better than Kanye. You just bashed Kanye a lot for things like talking about himself and not being socially conscious (which nobody in the thread said he was). DMX has a song called "X gon give it to ya" and only sings about how he's going to beat people up. Ludacris sings about hos and "pimpin all over the world".

If you want to just say that you prefer Luda and DMX's flow over Kanye's that's fine by me. But don't bash Kanye for doing a lot of the same things that those guys do.

I think you missed the whole point of my post...you said that Kanye has more substance in his music....now when you actually break down Kanye's material he really doesn't even talk about anything most of the time........I don't care if Luda talks about hoes or rims, the fact of the matter is dude is better...I don't care if X talks about killing people, the fact is dude is better.....what you're basically saying is that for the simple fact that kanye is "socially conscious" everynow and then, that that's what makes him better.....I've been jammin Chronic 2001 lately, and every damn song is about weed, sex, or violence...and you know what?..............the cd is great!!!!......now don't get me wrong I love artist such as Common, Mos, Chuck D, Paris, KRS One, Scarface, Nas, Rakim etc., because they are what I consider "my cup of tea" when it comes to hip hop music.....but at the same time I love listening to Big L, DMX, G. Rap, Redman, Dr. Dre, Snoop, Eazy E, Bonethugs, Mobb Deep, etc.....while they might not talk about the most positive things in their music, they still make great music........and that's what counts at the end of the day......that's what I meant by my post.

The main problem with your argument is that you are judging the man based on his singles. True hip hop heads know that some of the best tracks off of any album are the ones that you'll never hear on the radio. I still have to disagree, almost all of Kanye's songs have a message or story behind them.

Jesus Walks
Hey Mama
Through the Wire
Two Words
All falls down

Plus every track that he's done with Mos and/or Talib Kweli. It is NOT a fact the Ludacris and DMX are better than Kanye, it is your opinion. Ludacris has done nothing but prove that you can be a rapper simply by knowing how to rhyme words.

I agree that Chronic 2001 was and is a great album, but it was also highly anticipated. Dre hadn't done an album in 10 years, of course it was going to be good. Look into the HOrizon and realize that Ludacris is not better than Kanye.

On a side note, add Mike Jones to my list of overrated MCs, and Jurassic 5 to my list of great MCs/groups.

True hip hop heads know that the majority of his albums songs have no kind of social depth to them and true hip hop heads know that Kanye is nothing more than a gimmick for the most part.....and true hip hop heads know, that just because a rapper makes a song about Jesus, that it doesn't make him better than someone who would rather talk about hoes, weed, etc.......I base an artist on their talent....not their substance.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">It is NOT a fact the Ludacris and DMX are better than Kanye, it is your opinion.</div>

Yes it is my opinion....it's my same opinion that you seemed to attack at to begin with...so let's just leave it at that.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Chutney:</div><div class="quote_post">Juelz Santana.</div>

Mr I know u sick/ I know u tired/ I know u tired of being sick and tired/ Ay dipset haha

Cam'ron. Dude rhymes every single word he says. "That rooty tooty frooty looey"

40 Cal is the only Dipset guy that can rap good.

Agreed that dipset is overrated now. But there first CD was fire in my opinion, Diplomatic Immunity. They fell off since then. And somebody said Buddens was over-rated. Hell no. His new stuff is very nice, check the im back mixtape. Plus I gotta love anyone who reps Jersey like he does. But I got two lists.

My favorites

Talib Kweli
Mos Def
Lupe Fiasco
Common
Grafh

My overrated rappers

Dipset now
Eminem
50
Ja Rule
All those southern guys exluding Lil Flip

How is Wayne overrated?

He works hard unlike most MC's in the game today, and he is just confident in his abilities as a rapper.

He's overrated, because he's a "rapper" who makes catchy songs, yet some people think he's some kind of amazing lyricist.....I'd personally like to battle Wayne on wax, to prove this notion wrong.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">All those southern guys exluding Lil Flip</div>

LOL, out of all of the people in the south you say "Lil Flip"....mr. "I'll treat you like Milk and do nothing but spoil ya".....hahahahaha.

makes catchy songs? He makes good music. He isn't an amazing lyricist, but he has been in the game since 16 and he has done nothing but improve. His mixtapes are sick, and Tha Carter II is tight.

How many people actually talk about Wayne, where I am from he doesn't get talked about that much.

I would love to see you battle Wayne though, I've never heard you spit. But i'd put my money on Wayne.

You call him overrated but right now, who is doing it better?

dude lil wayne makes nice club songs for the most part, and I've been listening to him ever since the hot boys first came out, and I can tell you there is nothing amazing or "great" about this guy....don't judge a person's skill level based on their recognition in the public media

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Now let me show you upstairs
Got the glass house floor to let me know who up there
Look down and you see your reflection
You ain't gotta know who down here
You just know you protected
Hey man, how I don't know you connected
Here's a little more fiend let me see you inject it
That's right little wode respect this
Understand me or get 'cha mammy a death wish
Part one, part two, part three
All the parts of "Godfather" all a part of me
If you, look to the wall ya' see
A few, gagged up, tied up scared pricks
Got 'em, facin the wall like they was on "Blair Witch" (yea)
I ain't, chasin' at all but it get scary 'bout my chips
And in here is where I keep the bricks
Acknowledge lil' marley in the hallway
He got the clips
</div>

this is about how good it gets for lil wayne..... a couple of okay punchlines, but nothing earth shattering.....I've written better stuff.

I'm not judging his skill level from media recognition.

If you have written better stuff, then why aren't you in the studio recording and putting out an album? It is one hing to say you've written better stuff, but unless you are really trying to make it happen whats the point? Wayne had 100+ songs for one CD, lets see you make 150 different songs for an album.

I do record....and I'm putting out a mixtape pretty soon...and it doesn't matter if you do a 100 songs, if they're all mediocre....lol.....I understand you don't have to be a lyricist to make good hip hop music (Dr. Dre, Snoop, etc. have done it before), but with that being said, Lil Wayne's music still isn't something I'd call "good" and I definitely wouldn't call it "great"

I'm not a fan of Lil' Wayne, but the way some people talk about him like he's the nicest MC out - something he is far from. He makes good club music, but I've yet to hear a song he's written with actual meaning. Just my 2 cents. It's hard to debate on music because people have different tastes and opinions, so most of the time it goes nowhere.

Btw, Dream, could you post some your lyrics?

Actual meaning? Well is this one song on tha carter 2, written for his father who died. Called Get Over, and I think its pretty good and its meaningful.

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Btw, Dream, could you post some your lyrics?
</div>

Here's an old rhyme I wrote a couple of years ago...nothing special, but it's decent

My thoughts and images create potent sentences/
that provide forms of energy like photosynthesis/
My rolls significant you're just another sideshow/
who's survival chance is like a man who walks a mine field blind fold/
divine throne that I own I'll storm u like a cyclone/
pick u up then rip u up then throw u off the skydome/
My minds blown - when the mics on - I took and shook ya residence/
spiritually blessin messages like the book of exodus/
Perfectionist with excellence intelligence and sexiness/
I'm guessin it's the catchiness that makes the hits consecutive/
Executive that's wreckin it whenever that the session hits/
there's never been a lyricist that makes it seem so effortless/
Becareful you're in danger - I speak so radical/
Emcees I strangle then proceed to catapult/
Magical - fanatical - the scene we rockin it/
And I'm never cocky just extremely confident/

I read your lyrics out loud while tapping on my desk and it sounded better than any Lil Wayne song.

Seriously though, you got skills. Plus I like how you mentioned the Skydome.

^^^LOL, thanks.....all I need is 2 more songs to complete my first mixtape....I've been writing (seriously) since I was 17 and now I'm at the point where I have enough talent to make good music.

You got some skills. I'm strongly considering signing you.

I never usually say this about anyone, but Lil' Wayne straight up sucks. He may work hard, but he has terrible flow, his voice is annoying, his content is weak, his word play is sub par at best, he's just garbage all round.

^^LOL...I'll have to agree....I hate when he does that little squeak thing with his voice.

For every person who says bs like this I can find a person who can give you lyrics and audio that makes them think the exact opposite.

Its all a matter of opinion.

Wayne>Your favorite rapper.

Alright heres the list:

Nelly
50 Cent
T.I
Lil'Wayne
Kanye West
Dem Franchize Boyz

LMAO, so you think Wayne > Ra, Cube, G Rap, Nas, Andre 3000, etc????.....I understand the whole "_______ is better than your favorite rapper" phrase that everyone tries to use nowadays, but please realize what you're saying when you actually use it....and I've heard plenty of lil wayne, from his albums to his mixtapes....and yes dude is a C team rapper.

to answer the thread...all radio/commercial rap is overrated. about 99% of it has no substance, and 100% of it sucks

group most "dirty south" crap in with the commercial stuff ie: cash money retards...etc

Interesting thread, took me a while to catch up on all the arguements, so instead of quoting all the things that made my head tick.. I will do some ranting of my own.

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Voodoo Child:</div><div class="quote_post">Allow me to rant:
Am I the only one who thinks the whole "rap game" is overrated?</div>

I am glad you posted this (the entire post, just quoting the first of it). I agree with you in a sense tho. Music is what you make it. Some look to hip-hop for inspiration, or knowledge.. some listen to expression and passion, and some just to hear a nice ass "flow".

... and to the individual who posted about Nas. Thank you for bringing the Nas lovers' (which seems to be in well supply) on this board down to earth. Nas is easily one of my favorite arsists, bar none. But truth be told he has to the large scope of what people base his "greatness" off of, has put out some terrible albums to his name.

Illmatic - Ground breaking album. "Fire" in a sense. The raw talent on this album is phenomanal.
It was Written.. - Great follow up album. Probably one of the best sophomore albums there is.
I Am.. - Complete garabage to Nas' compared to his previous two albums. Trying to move into the scope of mass guest apperances with Puff Daddy, DMX, ect ect on this album was just a bad idea.
Nastradamus - I enjoyed this album for what it was, but like I Am.. it was pretty bad..
Stillmatic - His revival in a sense, I see a lot of split thoughts about this album, some say a watered down Illmatic, but I dont believe so. It has some GREAT songs on it.
God Son - Great album, period.

As far as Tupac goes, I agree a lot of his success now a days is breeded from his death, and its "the cool thing to do". However let that not take away from his music. He was never defined off how his lyrical skeems were, but more or less off his passion, love, hate, true character, not giving a f**K and the way he put himself out there...

Biggie, not enough to define how truely great he was going to be. Overrated - No.. what little he had was gold.

Underrated - Az

Personal favorite, probably biased opinion, underrated - Cormega

lol.

You can give me what ever you like from Lil' Wayne, its not going to change the fact he is garbage.

And you seriously think Lil' Wayne is better than Big L? (my favourite rapper).

Wayne is the 'flavour of the month'.

Check out what this guy said on another forum-

Lil Wayne would kill anyone in the game right now. Your the idiot if you cant comprehend what he's saying. It's called wordplay. Name one person that can **** with Wayne lyrically or freestyle wise. The only people I can think of that even come somewhat close are Cass and Papoose, but they aren't on his level.

It makes me insane
