Saw The Post. Decent. A little simplistic but great performances by Meryl Streep and Bob Odemkirk. Tom Hanks is doing his best late Spencer Tracy routine with panache.

Really want to see Den of Thieves when it comes out.
 
Saw the new Star Wars yesterday.

How many times can they follow the same predictable plot?

Fisher and Hamill managed to get through their scenes completely without emotion throughout the entire film.
 
Watched 15 minutes of Cell Block 99 with Vince Vaughn. It is a highly rated movie apparently. I guess being the type of person prone to fits of rage the phony sequence in the beginning where he trashes a car threw me off more than most. Couldn't finish it.

I know he is a tall dude but there is no way on this Earth he could rip a car hood off with his bare hands. So dumb. I may finish it someday when I get bored.
 
Lost Horizons With Ronald Colman.


They don't have all the video of this 1937 movie any longer. Still have the sound track though, so they just show a still shot during the missing parts part while playing the sound track.

I like this movie for a number of reasons, including the historical value, as it is the inspiration for naming the AirCraft Carrier, USS Shangri La.
When ask where the planes came from, referring to the Doolittle raid, FDR said, mimicking the style, of Ronald Colman, Shangri La! The next Carrier launched carried the name.

Dunkirk was great to behold but not as a regular movie. It felt like being a rubbernecker driving by a bad car accident.

The OG was good for it's time I guess, but in retrospect it was sloooooooow and dragging. 2049 was better to me just bc it wasn't the original, although the modern fx were definitely welcome.
 
Been into noirs recently. Saw Laura, the moody New York 1944 film starring Laura Tierney and Dana Andrews. Highly reccommend it. Has a character study of obsession that is beyond creepy. Right up there with Hitchcock's best work. Actually, it's hard to believe that the fat guy didn't direct it.
 
not a new movie but I just watched for the second time The Score with Ed Norton, De Nero, Angela Bassett and Brando...brilliant film start to end..amazing how many movies De Nero and Norton have paired up on...at least 3 this is a great one

Saw the original and was impressed they did such a good job on the restoration. The remake is maybe the worst music musical ever made. Wait no that's still Sgnt. Pepper....
 
Den of Thieves was - OK It had the makings of a damn good movie, but fell short, imho
Call Me By Your Name - good
The Post - good, It's difficult not to compare this film to Spotlight which was a great film. The Post felt pretty tame in comparison.
All the Money in the World - not bad
Darkest Hour - very good

I want to see the Shape of Water and The Commuter next.

I go to more movies than most people I know, but I signed up for moviepass recently and have seen even more than I usually see.
 
Bad Mom's Christmas is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Only the Brave is one the best movies I've seen in a long time. I assume it is best if you don't know anything about it going in.
 
So, which of the movies for Best Movie have you seen? My wife and I go to the movies a lot. She finally got me to go see The Shape of Water tonight. It was really great. Surprised I liked it. Hypnotic and sweet and well thought out. Very unique.

Here's the list of nominees:

Won't see Phantom Thread as I haven't liked Paul Thomas Anderson's recent films. 3 Billboards was great, so was Ladybird. The Post was good, but doesn't belong on this list. I think The Shape of Water wins, though it wasn't my favorite.

I've only seen Dunkirk and Get Out.

Liked both, Dunkirk was amazing but felt like rubbernecking at a car crash. Get Out was good and definitely different.

I'm not a good judge because I wait until everything comes out on Blu-ray.

Honestly the Oscar movies are kinda shit. Darkest hour looks boring. Can’t stand Meryl Streep so the post is a no go for me. Lady bird bleh. Shape of water looks alright. Three billboards also looks ehhh. Get out is overrated. I’m a big Christopher Nolan fan and Dunkirk has amazing cinematography but I thought that was also meh. My favorite movie of this entire year is wind river and blade runner. I’m kinda surprised windriver doesn’t have a nomination here. It was really good. Blade runner should get the cinematography win. Or Dunkirk. Who knows. I just can’t stand the Oscars.

Saw it last night, very good, a little too on the nose, the actual audio recordings of Nixon were a nice touch. From Script to final edit Spielberg pumped this movie out in 8 months. I get it, he was trying to make a political point but with all the star power he had in the movie it would have be better if he had taken a little longer and made a better movie.

Really enjoyed this movie but I'm a big Frances McDormand fan. It must be almost annoying for her when everyone who comes up with a Coen'ish type movie they call her to star in it.

I saw all of them except but Phantom Thread. I'm sure it's pretty good, but I don't plan to see it.
